Contempt of Court

I was on jury service a month ago, It is made abundantly clear that you are not to discuss the trial outside of the jury room. You are reminded every day from the moment you get in the building by the people who work there the barristers even remind you in court.

The judge reminds you every moment he gets before you start and after you start each session.

There is NO excuse for this and you are explicitly warned of the punishment that will follow breaking this one rule.

Absolutely resonable, absolute idiots. Retrials or if it doesn't get noticed. Wrongful convictions. Absolutely nessceray such people do hard time, otherwise the entire system falls down.

If it was my Trial I'd want them slung off the jury but I wouldn't want them slung in prison as prison is for criminals that are a threat to society.

I was a foreman on my Jury Glaucus, if it was not for the fact I actually cared for the case half of the jury I sat with would have just said guilty based on the fact the others thought as much. That half chose to follow the other just because they didnt really want to be there.

I think the jury service is a completely unfair system there are people who will just go with the group to get it over and done with sometimes as in our case that would have meant the man going to prison if not for the rest of us pushing to argue it out.

To many life changing decisions made by people who have little to no interest in the case and the changes it makes to the defenends life. Our Jury system is a joke and i learned that when I was doing my service.

I partially agree, people should be invited to attend then it's up to them whether they go on the first day and form part of the jury or not, but those with no interest in being there shouldn't be forced to be.

I've been invited to jury duty twice and both times it was cancelled the day before, but I'd actually like to do it, not for the drama but as I'd like to do my duty as a citizen of the UK. Perhaps some people see it as a chore but my father and mother have both done it and both felt that it was worthwhile.

Trouble is what's the alternative?

Judges decide everything, which does have some advantages: they are more aware of the law and so on but have the problem that judges can become 'case hardened' and struggle to separate 1 case from all the other similar cases they've heard before.

Not all western/civilised countries have jury trials (Germany for instance doesn't) and remember we don't have juries for all types of trials.

For anyone *really* interested in this sort of thing, I recommend reading the non-fiction book The Juryman's Tale by Trevor Grove.
