Spec me a 1440p card?

I have a 1440p monitor, and I'm in the middle of planning out a new system. I can stretch to a GTX 780, but paying £550 on a graphics card seems ridiculous to me, especially when a lot of the games I play aren't cutting edge. That said, I want it to last me like my last system (I had a 4850 that lasted me 4 years), so I don't want something that'll just be enough for now.

The other major factor is noise. I can't deal with loud noises (small flat, late night playing).

I'm not an overclocker and never overclock my GPU's.

A GTX 770 sounds ideal. I also recently upgraded (I use 1440p as well) but couldn't justify the cost of the 780.

I ended up getting this (it was on TWO - so slightly cheaper) and I can recommend it (especially on the noise side, it's very quiet)

Ultimately, if I were buying one today I'd probably get this

From what I've read though, the Lightning will be louder than the Phantom - this is just going off the fact I've read the Lightning is slightly louder than the Windforce, and in the several reviews I saw of the Phantom vs. Windforce, the Phantom was slightly quieter.

Personally, I don't think you could go wrong with either card. As a final note, the Phantom's warranty is dealt with by OcUK so it's one of the better warranties around.

It is not the best bang for buck but the GTX 780 will give the longest service @1440p

There are cheaper options with more performance like using a pair of HD 7950s if you don't mind xfire.

one card will not be enough to max everything at 1440p.

even the 690 (which according to people here isnt a single card) cant always give 60 fps at max.

I'm a little concerned about electricity cost (as well as noise) with sli or crossfire. At the moment I think 7950/7970/GTX 770 is basically what I'll go for, it's just narrowing down what really is the best option in terms of price and noise.

In terms of best value - the 7950 overclocked, while the game offer is still on. Some of them are extremely quiet. It still leaves the option of another 7950 later, and those will likely drop in price a lot in 3 months or so.

Cool what cards did you get and are they noisy at all?

Hi,

Got two of these:-

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-029-IN&groupid=701&catid=1914&subcat=1830

So far had not had much of a play, but one of the cards was not playing ball and refused to be seen - even in bios. After a lot of fiddling and swapping about grrrrr it eventually decided to work. They do seem pretty quiet and cool. One card however has a ticking fan - annoying, will take the shroud off tomorrow and have a look and see if I can stop the ticking. If not may have to do an rma to ocers. Not the greatest of starts. will update again tomorrow.

Mark

Ps managed to score 9318 on the latest 3d mark though(Firestrike) in the top 91% apparently, and have not overclocked yet
