Saw the van coming around this corner

http://goo.gl/maps/feIMf

It's a 30mph road I was doing somewhere between 35 and 40, I didn't see the whole van because there was oncoming traffic blocking it as I came round the corner but I saw the horrible black square and slowed to 29ish.

I'm pretty sure these things work that if you see it, then it saw you first. I'm just wondering if looking at that corner, whether the oncoming cars might have blocked the view of the van while I slowed.

It'll be interesting to see if I got caught or not, although I'll be annoyed if I get done doing less than 35 or I won't have got my fine's worth.

I managed to roll past a speed camera in Bristol 2 weeks ago, I was doing just under 40 - I eased off once I'd seen it, and I haven't heard anything at all - so if you were quick to slow down you *might* be ok, but don't count on it.

Is it 14 days or 14 working days? You might still get your ticket :p

Bit of a "how long is a piece if string" question really. Nobody can tell you except the person manning the camera.

Basically just keep your eyes on the post for he next couple of weeks and keep everything crossed.

They have to take reasonable measures to inform the registered keeper of the vehicle within 14 days. In practice, that means they could post the NIP on day 13 after the offence.

If you are not the registered keeper (i.e. it's a company car) then there's effectively no time limit for them to inform you.

You're unlikely to be "done" for less than 35 (especially if that's what your speedo said, as it's unlikely to be totally accurate), although I have been caught for 36mph in a 30 before. Anywhere up to ~39mph (and maybe a little above) and you're likely to be offered a Speed Awareness Course instead of taking the points + fine.

I should add that I was recently caught speeding in a 50mph limit on a dual carriageway. I was doing 70 when I came over the hill and saw the camera van, jumped on the anchors but still got caught at 58mph.

I was offered (and attended) a Speed Awareness Course.

/edit: there was one guy on the speed awareness course who claimed he'd be done for 33mph in a 30. No one, including the course instructors believed him - then he changed his story, said it "might have been 43mph" :)

Interesting about the speed awareness courses. It's a company car but also sort of not, it's done under the employee car ownership scheme so the car is registered in my name i believe. I could be wrong though.

Not sure if I would bother with the speed awareness course unless it takes place at the weekend, although maintaining a clean license might be preferential. Does a speed awareness course go on the paper part or is it completely hidden (unless directly asked about it I suppose), assuming I even get offered one?

A speed awareness course is only recorded at the DVLA for the purposes of preventing you from attending them more regularly than once every three years only. If you choose to take one you'll get no points and nothing will show on your license. I highly recommend doing it over taking the points!

Find out if the car is registered in your name. If it is, and you haven't heard anything within 14 days of the possible offence chances are that you've got away with it. If it's registered to the company the Police have 14 days to notify them, they then have 28 days to reply stating who actually uses the vehicle, then the Police get another 28 days to write to that person who has 28 days to respond, etc.

In my case the car is owned by the lease company, so they tell the police, the police write to my company, who tell them I have the car, then the Police write to me...total of up to 3 and a bit months potentially before I see the NIP.

I done the speed awareness course and found out I had forgotten more that I know about speed limits for different vehicles on different roads and some other stuff. I would recommend it, sure it takes a day out of your life but theres some good info to be learned and it keeps the points off your license which could be gone in a day if they have a clamp down in your area.

I think there were 20 people in the class and everyone got on with it with the exception of 2 who were moaning, one of them only attended because he had 9 points and the other because his driving and car performance was perfectly safe to do 100 on the motorway.

If you could see the van and you were speeding then it's quite likely that they've caught you, those vans have a huge range unfortunately.

Im not so sure, if he was only doing 35- 40 and on coming traffic was blocking the view a little if he reacted quick enough he might of just got away with it.

I had a similar thing happen doing about 60 in a 50 limit.. I noticed the van after coming over the hill in the right hand lane but traffic to the left of me vans etc were part blocking the view, I breaked quickly down to 50 and got away with it.

Similarly waiting by the letterbox hoping nothing falls through for me :(

There was a section of roadworks on the M4 signed at 50mph, no roadworks in sight! it was 7am everyone was still chugging along around 70mph only to come round a slight bend to see a van up on a flyover :( just after the flyover the 50mph terminated so back up to 70mph. They must have nabbed a good 20 odd cars that I could see! If admiral Ackbar was sat in my car he'd be screaming "It's a trap!"

Gutted :(

I've mentioned it several times on this forum, but I've got away with doing 85 past a mobile camera on a gantry, and never heard anything. I know for a fact it was 85, and I was the only vehicle on the road (7pm on a Saturday morning). Over a year ago now.

I'm still playing the waiting game :o

I was driving a little too fast heading towards Silverstone Circuit on the 18th of this month, it's two weeks in which they have to send the NIP to the driver/registered keeper right?

I think the police must serve an NIP within 14 days of the alleged speeding offence - not sure if postage is included in this though.

I was zapped a couple Sundays ago on the A13 in lane 1 with cruise control set to 75.

I compared this to GPS speed, which turned out to be 119kph/74mph

Copper was stood in the central reservation with a Lazor gun. Its exciting waiting to see if im going to be scammed by them

I'm in the waiting game too. Was doing the best part of a ton coming back from Scotland (was a 500 mile journey, and it was the return journey from hiking up Ben Nevis, so I wasn't much in the mood to hang about) and though I saw it and slammed the brakes on, I might still have been done.

I wonder what the range is on their cameras?

EDIT: How long does it take for these things to come through?
