What are the chances I've been done?

Probably the most accurate way to measure your actual speed is to use mile markers on a motorway sitting at a steady 70 for a few miles with a mate with a stop watch.

Really easy if you have cruise control.

You could do all of that, or you could just use a sat nav.

Those camera vans will normally clock you when you're around 100-150m away, even though they are technically capable of much further.

I tend to allow 20% maximum between the limit and the indicated speed - 10% for overread, 10% for the camera calibration.

10% for the camera calibration? You realise the lasers are, as near as makes no difference, completely accurate providing they have been calibrated, which is a requirement before they can be used.

Are speedo's so out of whack that 84 is 76?

I used to find about a 10% difference between both the cars i've had and what my Tomtom thinks. Dunno how accurate Tomtoms are mind, I assumed quite decent?

What causes misreadings then? Incompetent usage? I always thought the 10% ACPO rule was to cover any inaccuracy in the gun itself?

It's there to give the police some discretion about whether or not they choose to prosecute.

For evidence from a speed gun/camera to be admissible in court they need to be able to demonstrate that the device is properly calibrated. They are highly accurate devices.

Misreadings? Nothing, ACPO just build in a 10% + 2mph "recommendation" to forces to only NIP people who go over this. It's partly a political decision (as there would be quite a lot of backlash if people suddenly started getting caught doing 31mph in a 30mph and partly to cover any possible defences that the speed that someone was caught doing was inside the tolerances of the laser gun.

I've never seen one that far out. Assuming GPS is accurate the the most I have seen is about 3mph between indicated, so 80mph on speedo was 77 according to GPS.

Thats nearly 10%. All speedos will overread as they are not allowed to legally underread so they will always build in a little tolerance, but I can't see any motor manufacturer needing to having to go close to 10%

No.. lol

That is nowhere near 10%. 10% of 80 is obviously 8, so being 3mph out is definitely not near 10%. It's only 3.75%.
