I can't imagine the amount devs have to put up with to try and make everyone happy.

Link is inside the guardian article to the twitter abuse. (contains extreme profanity)

People may feel that the imaginary characters they "created" exist in a different space, that one's online persona along with the online others live in an make-believe dimension, a dream world, separate and apart from the demands and responsibilities of the real world. They split or "dissociate" online fiction from offline fact. Emily Finch, an author and criminal lawyer studying identity theft in cyberspace, has suggested that some people see their online life as a kind of game with rules and norms that don't apply to everyday living (pers. comm., 2002). Once they turn off the computer and return to their daily routine, they believe they can leave that game and their game-identity behind. Why should they be held responsible for what happens in that make-believe play world that has nothing to do with reality? After all, it isn't that different than blasting away at your pals in a shoot-em up video game... or so some people might think, perhaps unconsciously.

Giantbomb article.

“FEZ II is cancelled,” said Fish in a statement on Polytron’s website. "i am done.i take the money and i run. this is as much as i can stomach. this is isn’t the result of any one thing, but the end of a long, bloody campaign. you win.”

He did throw a bit of a tantrum, but I think he does have psychological issues.

Shame, won't see a sequel to one of the best games ever.

If anyone has netflix, there is a program on the called " Indie Gamer" I think, it follows the people making super meat boy and that guy Phil as he struggles with Pez (one). Its a good watch, but I couldn't help but think when I watched it that your man Phil requires professional help with his mental state....

I don't for a second believe Fez 2 has been cancelled. It's a PR stunt.
There is no way Polytron will be willing to lose the money they've sunk into development so far and the money they'd make from the game over such a trivial thing.

Almost all of those tweets come from new Twitter accounts, presumably made solely to send those very tweets. Regardless, I wouldn't even bat an eyelid if I received those; the idiots are probably too busy getting in a few more hours of CoD before mummy sends them to bed.

You're referring to 'Indie Game The Movie'. It's a really good watch and I think you're right, Phil Fish does have some psychological issues. I just hope he finds the help he needs.

The comments made to that Treyarch dev surely warrant arrests? Unbelievable what people think/can get away with on the internet.

Totally agree. I mean if you're upset/angry over something then put it across correctly, and you never know it may get addressed, but saying they would kill his family/rape them/wish they died of aids.....that's just messed up.

The scary thing is, the people saying those comments on twitter probably come off as genuinely nice people in real life.

I really thought the whole anonymity on the internet died out. Now that everyone has facebook and online accounts that show your real name ect. It isn't as easy as it used to be to hide yourself.

Indeed, and yet were someone to go on Twitter and have a race-related rant at someone, they would likely be arrested for it. I'm not saying racist tweets shouldn't be looked at by the authorities, but for me death threats and rape threats are just as serious and should be treated as such.

Sure it is, you just fill in a false name..

reminds me of...

He later tried to delete his page but was arrested the following day at his student house in Swansea.

Seems a little extreme that they would crack down on him so quickly. You'd think the police would have more important crimes to stop.

It takes effort to be a ghost on the internet these days. You have to go out of your way to do it. You basically have to create a fake email, hide your ip, change your writing style ect. Take me for example, I didn't put much effort into "fergietime". I was figured out in a second.

Fish has always seemed to have a rather abrasive personality, but I think a lot of that is also the product of the environment and industry. Look at the entertainment industry; Amanda Bynes, Lindsay Lohan, Justin Bieber etc etc, all successful young people who end up cracking under the strain of the demands that their industry puts on them, and the fans and critics they attract. It seems like it's just a given that if you appeal to the masses, you're also appealing to the worst society has to over.

Sure, there's always the view that if you can't take the stress, don't get into the business in the first place, but I don't think it's really as simple as that. Clearly there's a bigger, more widespread problem here otherwise it wouldn't be ringing true for so many other developers and games journalists who have recently talked about the sort of abuse they get.

Marcus Beer's show, which seemed to ignite Fish's latest spat, is presumably appealing only to the emotionally immature and mentally under-developed. This "Angry Gamer" cliché is become all too common these days; they like to think they're giving an honest, brutal view of the gaming industry but the reality is, they're just appealing to the lowest-common denominator of gamer/troll who wants to feel validated. Criticism is vital for any industry, but calling game developers "hipsters" and "tosspots" just because they didn't want to comment really speaks volumes about how senseless all of the name-calling and abuse has become.
