who else do madrid have whose first language is english?

i seriously cannot comprehend how people can't get the benefits bale has off the pitch that other players who are in the same ball park as him (performance wise) don't.

So Ronaldo being a huge star in America and worldwide, a MUCH bigger star than Bale and a much bigger star in English speaking countries(he's still a MUCH bigger star in England than Bale) is effected because English is his second language... are you even remotely serious?

Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Ronaldo, Torres(was), Drogba, RVP, these are all players people would consider bigger stars than Bale... and not a one of them speaks English as their first language, and all of them speak English, several very fluently, the rest I'm honestly not sure about. The ability to speak english as a first language isn't and hasn't ever been deemed a way to be a big star. Its basing this all upon Beckham being a bigger star than some of those guys, worldwide and assuming its because he speaks English... its not and never was. He was a huge star in Spain... despite not being Spanish speaking as a first language(or even that well at first). Its a completely false assumption that Beckhams star status in America is down to being English speaking. He was a huge star here in part because he was lets be honest, the best looking player in the league as footballers went from sportsmen to celebrities. He married a VERY famous celebrity, they were in the press all the time, they got into advertising hugely very early on as a celebrity power couple. None of it was because he could speak English.

i haven't said the fact that english is his first language is the main factor but it's a factor.

anyway, i'm sick of going over this. madrid come to the conclusion he is worth x amount, levy has come to the conclusion he is worth y. it's pointless criticising it anymore or trying to explain why. it is what it is and whatever it turns out to be.

Of course some of it was; the ability to give interviews and appear in adverts and actually speak English obviously affected the ability of stars to generate a brand.

It's all about the British, more so than anytime. Every sport out there, we have our stake. F1, tennis, athletics, cricket, cycling, rugby...we are bossing the sporting icon world at the moment, Bale just adds to that...

seeing as it seems it's not just Baz87 who can't seem to get his head around why bale may command such a fee. here's a good bit from today's telegraph.

bale's fee would not be simply 'just for footballing reasons'

Bale can't "command" that fee, but someone may be stupid enough to pay that for him. It doesn't mean that he is actually worth that much though.

99% of the time everyone judges whether or not a player was "worth it" when they start playing after the transfer has happened. Has anyone asked themselves how well Bale would need to play to start to justify that fee?

It will be interesting to see how well he does in comparison to say... Neymar.

madrid are willing to pay what they feel he is worth to them. there are numerous factors and as i said, let's see what that turns out to be.

If that happens I will probably stop watching Everton. I don't want that ******* thug associated with my team.

soldado could be announced today. i bleedin' hope so.

Sure you said that about 5 days ago as well

The thing with Bale is everyone keeps going on about how we should "bite their hand off" if we get an offer anywhere near £85m, but everyone seems to overlook the possibility that if we do go for that, everyone will know we have £80m+ in the bank and so won't sell any of their players to us at a reasonable price.

Look at Arsenal, they announce a £70m 'war chest' and have been unable to sign anyone. It surely can't be a coincidence, I'd put money on them not signing anyone because they've shown everyone their hand.

In addition, Zidane's lark about the whole "once in a lifetime opportunity" or whatever it is he said is also a load of BS. If Bale performs just as well this season for Spurs then Real will still be interested and if anything two successful seasons will bode a lot better for their investment which will mean we could potentially even put another few million on top as well.

In the event we do sell then, and it better be for £80m+, I think we should get all our transfer dealings done and dusted first and then sell him once we have our squad tied down. At least that way we can avoid over inflated prices.

According to this, Arsenal now considering Modric.

I doubt this will come off, just the daily star trying to kick up more gossip and discussion owing to the north London rivalry.

I'd personally accept the bid because Bale's very prone to season long injuries and he's due another before the season starts.

Much the same could have been said about RVP and we saw what happened there......

This is exactly my view on the whole thing, players we may have been looking at and priced at a certain level all of a sudden get £5-10m added on top by their team once they know we have the money to spend.

If Bale does go then I do feel we have the squad to replace him, however they will need to step up their game (Dembele/Holtby) and really make a contribution to the overall goal tally of the team.

Bale is the first midfielder that we have had for a long time that has actually scored a significant amount of goals, if it hadn't been for him, we would have been lost last season due to Defoe's dry spell after Christmas.

Wasn't Big Dunc going to potentially do something with Everton in a coaching role?...I would love to See Joey Barton kick-off in training, and then Dunc comes in and flattens him!

Please can we leave the "is Bale worth £100m" discussion alone now. Its going round in circles and it makes absolutely no difference what we think. Madrid will offer what they (and a team of advisors) feel he is worth to the club and Tottenham will either accept or reject that offer. No one is going to change their opinion on his value over the course of the next few weeks as it is a purely subjective matter.

If there was actual transfer stories people might change the topic, until then this the bale, Suarez and fabregas thread :p
