Evening all,

Had my current desktop for about 5 years, starting to creak a bit so looking to build something new. Considerations are:

  • Balancing price with longevity and quality
  • Should require minimal upgrading over the next 3-5 years. RAM, graphics card, more storage perhaps
  • Should be overclockable so I can push it later in life for some more performance
  • Enough power from the PSU should I want to crossfire
  • Minimalist design, nothing garish, flashy, lighting up etc
  • SSD nice to have for zippy OS
  • Blu-ray reader for Blu-ray movies
  • 5.1 sound support for speakers
  • Needs are some data crunching, general use, and gaming ranging from occasional to oh dear god can't stop playing this game

To that end, I came up with this.

1 x Fractal Design Define R4 Black/Pearl
1 x Corsair Builder Series CX 750W Modular '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply
1 x Gigabyte Z87-D3HP Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard
1 x Intel Core i5-4670K 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail
1 x Corsair Hydro H60 High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler *Manufacturer Refurbished Unit - 90 Day Guarantee
1 x Corsair Vengeance 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual/Quad Channel Kit (CMZ16GX3M4A1600C9)
1 x Gigabyte HD 7790 OC 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
1 x Samsung 120GB SSD 840 SATA 6Gb/s Basic
1 x Toshiba (7K3000.D) 3TB SATA 6GB/s 64MB Cache - OEM
3 x BitFenix Spectre PRO PWM 140mm Fan - Black

Wasn't really considering paying £950-£1,000 odd, but happy to.

Based on my considerations, would you do it differently? Could you do it cheaper? Maybe 2x4GB or 2x8GB sticks?

Your thoughts appreciated!

Theres no Graphics card in that spec? What will you be gaming on?

Have you got a graphics card already?

8GB should be fine for your uses..

Oops.

Changes,

Case: Cheaper, stylish and quiet case, well built.
Motherboard: The 'X' supports Xfire/SLI better (x8/x8) rather than (x16/x4)
SSD: A little cheaper, just as good, plextor is OEM for intel
PSU: XFX PSU are made by Seasonic, 850W is MORE than enough (its actually cheaper than the 750W version)
HDD: 2TB will last you a life time. :)
RAM: 8GB of fast RAM, you'll feel the speed.
GPU: The 670 is way above the 7790, great price (though pre-order)
Cooler: H80, better than H60 obviously, as you may be waiting for the GPU this can be waited for too. :)
Fans: The Apaches are very good and silent. :)
