Design my Scottish Hollyday

nah, I would book if it's a weekend - you could spend ages trying to find somewhere otherwise, tourist like these places so you're better to book ahead

Well I'm screwed then, I've looked at about 40 places online, all are fully booked. Looks like we'll be sleeping in the car. Any good car parks in Inverness?

is there something on that weekend in inverness?!
as I said before, you should just spend the night on mull and head up there the next day

There's a book festival? I don't have that many days. On Sunday I also have to go home!

drive to oban on the friday night, get ferry first thing sat/whole day going through mull, over to ft william, up to aviemore (via inverness)
then home on sunday?
could take a tent and camp at aviemore/could stay just outside inverness fort augustus/drummadrochit if you don't want to go as far as aviemore...

do you have a tent? Ft Augustus has a lovely campsite on loch ness with all the facilities

If you're going as far as Fort William and have time, try for Kyle of Lochalsh too. Edinburgh at festival time is worth it, but accommodation will be extortionate, so if you're going to sleep ion the car this is the time for it!

Glasgow is fine, but definitely stick to the tourist/shopping areas, it's very easy to wander into a bad area. Skip Kilmarnock.

Most of all, try not to rush, the Highlands are best appreciated when you take time to stop and just stare at it all.

Having lived in both cities for a similar number of years and being from neither I can say, as an impartial observer, that Glasgow is a more fun place to be and Edinburgh is a more fun place to tick boxes of things you've seen.

There are also some absolutely dreadful parts of Edinburgh so to suggest that only Glasgow has this issue is misleading at best.

Skip Kilmarnock.

Unless you want some smack or to be murdered, this is pretty solid advice.

Take away the tourist area from Edinburgh and the place is a dump really, but thankfully for our tourism then 99% of people just go and see the castle etc and assume it's a lovely place :D

My wife and I are flying to Inverness then driving to JOG staying in a b and b for one night, then around the top to Durness and Smoo cave. One night there then driving back to Inverness and a flight home. I have never been that far North of the wall so I am quite excited.

If you're going up to inverness you could always stay at a place called findhorn, they rent out rooms in the findhorn foundation ;) Its about 40 minutes from inverness, mind you, you will probably be staying with some weed smoking hippy.

Has anyone mentioned APplecross yet? O and findhorn foundation is pretty cool to be fair, I can see it from my work but I wouldn't travel all the way just to go there.

Yes, but my point was that in Edinburgh it's not easy to wander into a bad area quickly. It's definitely the case in Glasgow.

I too have lived in both and still live in Edinburgh. Glasgow is definitely more of a city vibe and a better place for nightlife. Edinburgh is more of a large town vibe, nearly everything worth doing and seeing is within walking or short bus ride distance of the centre.

I'm going to assume that you're joking.

I honestly don't know what this means but they are both great places to be, see and visit. You just get different outputs from them.

If you can't find a hotel to stay at have a look for campsites that have wigwams or caravans to rent but you will still need a few provisions.

If you want to consider that I have a few recommendations.

Bottle of scotch. Bedroom. Key. Lock. Doesn't matter if you're in Scotland or not then. And you can save yourself this pointless and unnecessary faff.

Well that was **$%ing easy. Next.

It's was a bit late in the day to be looking for somewhere to stay in Inverness at this time of year. It's full of tourists in the summer holidays. It's also a bank holiday weekend and Belladrum is on. Although loads of people will be camping there is abound to be a lot of people staying in Inverness for that too.
