I want to purchase a main monitor for mainly video viewing and gaming.

I'd like to spend under £200 if possible and have a few criteria:

PLEASE be glare proof
PLEASE look nice ;P aesthetically and must perform too! :P

I was thinking about the Acer S275HLbmii S or AOC I2757FH 27 or Dell Ultrasharp U2412M 24

The AOC has my eyes though as it looks amazing and it is 27 inch at an exceptional price

max i'll pay is for 250 if quality is so much better. don't need wide viewing angles just picture quality

also have a LG D234P 3d TN monitor that will turn from my primary as my new secondary with the addition of the monitor

I would go for the AOC, it's actually one of my favourite sort of 'all round' monitors at a really good price. The colour setup and general look to the image is actually nicer than on the Dell, partly due to the newer AH-IPS panel being better calibrated before AOC even get hold of it and partly due to the lighter matte (anti-glare) screen surface. The glare-busting properties are still very effective, don't worry about that. This factor alone rules out the Acer because it has a highly reflective glossy screen.

Thanks for the post, I was a afraid nobody was going to post!

I was eagering towards the AOC, it looks beautiful anyway. I've never heard of AOC so how is customer service there?

Will I need to purchase a very expensive calibrater or not? I'm hoping not too as they can cost me £160!

For video viewing, general use and games you should find the monitor gives a very nice image without calibration (it's factory calibrated rather well). On the unit I tested (was an i2757Fm, very similar though) I just had to change the colour temperature from 'Warm' to 'User' and it balanced out the image very well indeed. Obviously reduce the brightness a bit too.

AOC's customer service I'm not entirely sure about as I haven't had to deal with them. I have dealt with their PR team and their technical staff (engineers) and they are truly wonderful. If that's anything to go by, you shouldn't have any problems.

That sounds good mate.

I'll end up purchasing the AOC once I have some more funds,

how ever can you give me some insight on people slightly complaining about 27inches running at 1920x1080. I sit about 40CM away when watching movies and around 35cm away when playing games. the reviews on no competitor talk!for the monitor are all very sharp and 5*

Sure. A lot of people giving 27" Full HD monitors flak either haven't actually used one themselves and in some cases are trying to justify the purchase of a more expensive WQHD model (often with the alternative being a faster 1080p model, 120Hz+ perhaps).

Having tested 23-24" and 27" models of that resolution side by side on numerous occasions I don't find there to be much difference between the two. The 27" obviously looks like a slightly enlarged version of the 23-24" model but it doesn't suddenly become stretched, pixelated or anything ghastly like that. 35cm is quite close to be sitting for a screen of that size I suppose but it's not necessarily going to be a problem (or make things look 'unsharp') as the pixels are still tiny little things.

Alright thanks, I was hoping this was the response, something along the lines of this :)

So do you test monitors often mate? By the look of your signature, I believe so?

If you do then I would be appreciate it if you took some pictures of 23 inch 1080p, 27 inch 1080p and 27in 1440p as I would like to compare them

would the AOC be good enough or should I save an extra 100 and get the DGM WQHD 27" as it would offer far better quality?

Im considering the Acer S275HLbmi , its one hell of a screen and great reviews all round , but has a gloss coating , the gloss coating seems to bring out the best of the monitor though according to the reviews . £205

there is also a 6 series ACER S276HL, it has a media link for phones and tabs .

The DGM obviously has resolution in its favour but it has considerably more input lag (may not be a problem), weaker contrast and a glossy screen with the latter being something you were quite specific in not wanting.

I do test monitors frequently. Unfortunately I only have access to 27"+ monitors at the moment (double unfortunate that I just returned a 24" 1920 x 1080 monitor that I was reviewing).
