My neighbour has one of these that's been working fine until yesterday she replaced the black cartridge. She usually uses the large capacity one (PGBK 526) but could only get the small capacity size (BK 525).
When she put it in, the error message U043 appeared on the display 'The Following Ink Tank Cannot Be Recognized', which according to the Canon support FAQ means that the 'ink tank is not installed'.
I had a look at it for her, and it appeared to have been installed properly as it was in the right slot (a good start), and the red light was on. However, when checking with the software and on the display, it said it could not recognise the large capacity cartridge as it was not installed!
So after rebooting the printer, taking out and replacing the new cartridge and putting it back again, the message still appeared.
So I put back the empty large capacity cartridge in (keeping the new one in as well), and sure enough, the message disappeared. I printed a test page, but the printer didn't print any black, so it was clearly not recognising the new cartridge, but was the empty one!
My assumption was that the new cartridge was faulty, so I told her to take it back and get a replacement.
Forward on to today, and she managed to get a new larger capacity one, installed it, and now the error message persists, this time saying that smaller cartridge cannot be recognised!
(I've looked online for an answer, and it appears this is quite common with Canon printers, but I couldn't find anything specific to this model).
I've checked the pins for the cartridge chips in case they were bent or out of line using my eyes and a dental mirror, but they look ok, and done pretty much the same things I did yesterday to trouble shoot, but to no avail.
So was wondering if anyone knows a solution to this annoying problem (have I missed anything, is the print head faulty?), as she needs to print some important documents today.
