I've been rattling my brain this year

I need a bigger car really, but I will probably get one next year

I know its early for me to ask really, but as I've said, my brain is rattling about thinking about it, so I need to put it to bed and hope you can help me.

Current car :

Clio Sport 172 (2002)

Requirements :

I transport my bike in the car now and then, so I need a bigger car

5 doors
same performance or better (insurance shouldn't be a problem)
preferably a newer car than mine if poss

price I say about 3 to 4K
Manual gearbox

ideas?

3 series touring?

Such as this one

Only just newer, but great performance and not a ridiculous number of miles. Fox will be along shortly to tell me I'm a buffoon because a Clio 172 driver that can't afford a car yet isn't likely to want to put up with the running costs of an old 330i.

ST220 hatch. I'd suggest an estate but there aren't that many of them, and tbh the hatch would swallow a bike easily.

ooo, didn't think of a BMW in my price bracket

its auto, I should have said, must be manual, I guess you can get one in manual

Obvious, but Leon Cupra R / Octavia VRS ?

looked at Cupra R's , nice big boot

Skoda Octavia VRS? Not sure a 5 door Focus ST can be had for £4K.

Looked at the vrs, good cars (dad used to have one), little on the slower side though?

Focus ST170 can be had for 4k easy but 3 door only, the St2 and st-3 seem to go for 5K +

ST220 hatch. I'd suggest an estate but there aren't that many of them, and tbh the hatch would swallow a bike easily.

interesting
link please

ST220

On a serious note, yes a ST220 will suit you down to the ground. Fast, fun and huge! I chuck 3x 20" mountain bikes in the back with ease (front wheels off and the double seat behind the passenger seat down).

Only downside is the fuel, they drink fuel like a Scooby.

Saab 9-3/9-5 aero estate. I've got a 9-5 and it's a great bike transporter. It's very comfortable when you're just cruising but has a decent turn of speed, overtaking ability is especially good. It's also not to difficult to find 1/2 owner, fsh cars within your budget either so you can be picky.

I used to have Mondeo hatch and it required very careful manoeuvring to get my mtb in whole which got annoying. ST220 estates are sadly pretty rare. 530 estates are worth a look to if you can find a good one (I couldn't).

Ask again next year. Lots can change.

my thoughts too, but when im ready to buy, I will ask again for sure, market can change (and it does)
but im curious to see what I can get now

one car I really do want is a Scooby wrx, but sadly out my price bracket for the model I want (2003 on)

Impreza WRX wagon?

Or one with a Prodrive performance pack already fitted although it is the ugly bugeye model :(

An ST220 estate would also be perfect, i almost bought one a few years ago but it was a bit too grown up for me at the time, as said very hard to find one though.

isn't the first one u link to have prodrive fitted then?

hate bugeye scoobies, must be either the blob eye or hawkeye

There's really nothing to worry about on a 'high' milage WRX, the 2004 one i linked to has only done 9,500 miles a year.

Parts are so hilariously cheap on those things milage really isn't a concern as long as the body is in decent shape, break a gearbox? £200 for another, new up-rated discs and pads all round? £235 etc etc
