i witnessed a fantastically amazing event yesterday

I wonder how much he has spent over the years gambling and if this win covers it? :p

My old man does quite well over a year betting on mainly horses & football and he always has a '3:1 about' when betting on football (3 goals against 1 for either team) and he wins a lot.
He allows himself £5 a day betting and the money he wins at the end of the week goes in a pot which them goes on a big blow out day at a racing course so eventually the bookie gets it all.
At least twice a year he will have a big win (say £1000) and he will buy a toy so if you do the math he always slightly comes out on top but not by much.

In UK English, we say maths.

Everyone in the pub was cheering when Rex Imperator bolted in to complete the bet.

Yeah I could understand that, I won mine online, it was when I told people later they were either not impressed I was gambling or just told me I'm a lucky **** and they never get lucky.

I went to the bingo for the first time and won some dosh, the OAPs on the other table looked at me and went ****** youths.

People get jealous, I won £1200 on an accumulator once and people seemed more ****** off with me than happy.

Typical British response it would seem :p

Good on him though! If I won almost £100,000 on a £16 bet I would probably pass out :p

A couple of months ago I had a couple of pints with this guy:

The Newport Novelty Bet

In 1989 a man from Newport placed a £30 accumulator bet. The wager included odds of 4 to 1 that Cliff Richard would be knighted, 3 to 1 that U2 would not split up, and 5 to 1 that Eastenders would remain part of the BBC schedule until the millennium. Eleven years later the forgotten Welshman entered the same bookmakers with a moth eaten betting slip to claim his winnings at odds of 6,479 to 1. A shocked Ladbrokes paid out £194,400.

Quite an interesting story about how Ladbrokes at first refused to pay out, and how much trouble some national newspapers went to to try to find out his identity.

Seen a guy do a lucky 15 for winnings of £70k'ish before though he was a 'professional' gambler i.e. he didn't have a job, spent the day in the bookies and relied on winning for his income, best I ever did was £620 from a £1.65 (10p bets and 15p tax) lucky 15, thankfully I paid the 15p tax back in the day so didn't pay it on the winnings.
