Evening all,

Looking to change the Mrs fiat 500.

We are looking for a 4x4 platform, been looking at Q3, Kuga, Qashqui etc.

I have been looking at the RRS and it seems you can get some nice examples for 16kish.

I would prefer the RRS, for when I can drive and also for that little bit more driveway bling :P

The cars we have been looking at are between 23k - 30k (PCP finance) so yes looking at newer cars, but think I would prefer the car and extra cash stashed away for the RRS.

What things spring up on the RRS we should be aware of?

Forgetting MPG what is running cost going to be like?

Not scared of putting money in a car...at the end of the day had to fit new flywheel, springs, tyres, cambelt on the Audi in less than 12 months.

Was also looking at a BMW X5 (04 - 06) as a cheaper to buy option but feel the RRS looks will not age over the next few years of ownership.

Any other alternatives greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The early ones seem to be prone to lots of trouble and are glacially slow as well - the 2.7 diesel simply isn't powerful enough for a car of that size. The petrol ones are better but the fuel consumption is hilariously bad.

It's one of those cars that ends up in a no-mans-land pricewise where those who can afford the running costs just buy a newer one leaving only those who can't in the market.

Thanks fox.

We would be looking at the petrol rather than diesel.

It is a second car and will be doing around 3-5k per annum.

What issues are we looking at? I would have thought the ones I would have been looking at would have possibly had these ironed out within the warranty period or am I wrong?

He kept going on about how crap the old one was, so not that great a sign :p

Only the fact it wasnt a true RR as based on a Disco and not very sporty!!

Apart from Fuel what do we really need to look out for??

Only thing I took from my boss having a 59 plate one was that they seemed to be heavy on the bushes. His got a shimmy...which he was told wasn't a fault but according to a 4x4 expert said it happens to most.

Could just be a myth though.

He moved on to the X5 which he says is more car like and sporty compared to the RRS being a bit comfier and feeling like you're flying a plane.

I've got a 59 reg (one of the current models with the LED lights) and they are a great car. Agree with Top Gear about the older sports being poo (engines and interiors were crap and cheap).

The one we have is the 3.0 SDV6 I believe and it moves along very well and handles even better. My only gripe is the gearbox which is clunky in the sense that it doesn't always change when you want it to or hesitates. Seems to be the way the gearbox is programmed / made so its a model issue more than just being my car.

Otherwise its a very wise choice compared to the other cars you mention.

If your monies going towards an older one I think I would reconsider the petrol engine but if your mileage is going to be as low as you say it is then maybe it will be the right one for you go with?

I'm a bit confused by the budget though. If you have up to £30k you'd be better buying as later model as possible, ideally with a warranty.

I've got the TDV6 on a 61 plate and love the car. I'll be keeping it for 3 years then tradin in for a year old new model as I just can't see myself wanting to go back to a 'normal' car after the driving position and practicality of the RR Sport.

Why not a full-fat RR?

Could be an option, just like the look of the sports. Assuming the Sport is a bit smaller also?

Been looking quickly and seen the following which catch my eye:

Reason for the budget is at £26k ish for example we would get a brand new/nearly new car that would only require the typical maintenance and pretty much have 3 years free motoring with a finance cost of around £370 - £400 per month.

RR Sport with deposit will sit at around £250 per month, freeing up in theory £120 - £150 per month to keep to one side for repairs.

If we increase the monthly costs will go up, effectively eating into the maintenance slush fund. Just wondering what we should expect to go wrong?

I am going into this with eyes open, and I am more than happy to listen and take on other reccomendations, with examples if possible?

Thanks

Don't borrow money to buy an 8 year old car.

If you have cash just sloshing around you don't know what to do with then maybe an early Sport makes sense but not if you need to borrow for it, imho.

Can't say I have £16k to splurg on a car, was thinking of a loan over 3 years.

I would hope that after 3 years the car even being 11 year old would still be worth £5k plus?

Are X5's worth looking at, anything available in this price braket?

I have a 2008 RRS with the TDV8 Diesel engine.

The wife wanted a 4x4. I don't really like them and much prefer a normal car or estate if the space is needed. The only 4x4 I could see myself in was the Range Rover Sport so we ended up buying one of those.

The 2.7 TDV6 felt too slow for overtaking on A roads and motorway and the petrol was too juicy.

Despite not being keen on 4x4 cars, the RRS definitely has that luxury feel to it (which is surprising given it is has cheap plastic in abundance) and the drive is very good. Wack it into sport mode and the TDV8 flies. The hydraulic suspension is also good fun.

Had mine for about 18 months and the only thing that has gone wrong (touch wood) is the compressor which was replaced under warranty and the spare wheel being nicked.

The general consensus is to run these under a decent warranty as bills can be large if something does go wrong. You may want to check out http://www.rrsport.co.uk for more info. They have a good, helpful forum.
