Hello all

I have had a XFX 6850 HD for nearly two years, and the fan has finally died, ever since I owned it it's been very loud as standard and sometimes made some very peculiar noises so i'm dubious about buying an XFX again.

I'm looking for a new card but don't have too much spare funds any advice on what to get? I'm looking around the £100 mark maybe £120. IT doesn't even need to be an upgrade as the card was doing the job.

Seems the 7790 looks likely, but there are a lot of versions, also the 650 ti, but the boost seems a bit out of price range.

Any advice? especially on which manufacturer I wouldn't want this noise again.

Thanks Roo

Can you not rma the 6850?
Unless the retailer would take care of the rma, there's no much point as XFX's customer support for UK is non-existing and they just dump the responsibility onto the retailers and openly declare they want nothing to do with it.

One reason reason I'd steer clear of XFX.

Hmmm. I would go for the gigabyte 7850 . Its about £35 more than your top end budget but it'd a good card. Quiet and warranty is three years and good RMA turnaround .

I looked in b-grade but no good cards in your price range. You could have course look at other sites for prices.

Hi

Thanks for the replies, as mentioned I got in touch with XFX about an RMA, they initially told me to get in touch with the reseller eventually they said i could RMA it to the netherlands but at a cost to me both ways, not really sure it's worth it to be honest. The card has been a pain noise wise since day 1.

As for the 7850 it does look ideal, but seems a bit out of my price, any advice on which 7790 people would go for, there is also a 2gb GTX 650 ti, but not the boost version in my price range.

Thanks again

Why not just get an aftermarket cooler and rev the beast for another few months and save for the 9xxx series?

^^
I'd go with simply changing the cooler or an RMA pretty sure xfx have changed their tune with RMAs haven't they ? you have nothing to lose by still doing the RMA

If the cards younger than 2 years as I think their warranty is 2 years. You could fix that card easy though just buy a new fan or cheap arctic accelero cooler for it or even take the shroud off and cable tie a spare fan to it.

No point spending £100-£120 to buy a new card thats the same performance as the old card when it's so easily and cheaply fixed and made cooler quieter for £10-£20 or even free if you cable tied a spare fan on it..

You can compare many a card here pretty reliably GPU2012 GPU 2013 bench tool http://www.anandtech.com/bench/GPU13/583

If it were me I'd simply buy an accelero cooler for it and be done.

as people have said either repair the fan with a replacement shroud/fan, or buy an aftermarket cooler. Don't waste your money on a 7790, either save for a 7850 2gb,
or get hold of a 650ti boost.

Hello guys

Thanks for all the replies, I took a mixture of your advice, I ordered the Gigabyte 650ti Boost 2gb card, and I ordered an accelero cooler for my 6850 as I have beent putting together a relatively simple computer for my brother and thought he could use my 6850, and me being impatient can use the new card and at the same time it will be a bit of an upgrade, i hope.

Thanks
