Yesterday my exhaust fell off on the M1, **** me up :( lol

kUOfriD.gif

(Pic stolen from google - Mine had 4 connectors where that has 2, 2 of mine have been sheered off since) That bit fell off so it sounded like a tank and very loud digging into road.

Anyway, Towed back and dumped car at a garage that was shut.

They rang me this morning saying my cat converter is mashed because I drove it with it banging on floor so a bit sheered off (part of M1 had no hard shoulder so had to creep at 10mph till there was one)

Plus it needed a new 'middle bit of exhaust' too,

for the Cat converter & Middle exhaust, Labour & VAT = £216.. No idea if this is reasonable or not.

Should I get a quote from elsewhere (hard work as car is not driveable) or just pay £216?

Car is a 206 1.6 xsi '04.

Cheers Motors!

Yeah £216 fitted, He did say something about the cat being expensive but as I know sod all about cars I thought I'd check first as I've never used the Garage either.

Will tell them to go ahead, Cheers fella.

Seems reasonable to me. See if they will do it £200...worth a shot to haggle.

Main cost is the cat as they aint cheap.

Sounds fine, you could probably source a cat cheaper yourself but tbh there's nothing scary about that quote, would just go ahead

Cheers for the replies.

Went and picked it up not long ago and strait away it didn't feel right, Very 'grumbly' so after about half a mile I stopped and looked underneath, Leaking a lot of fumes from the Cat link to centre silencer connection*

* I thought they'd replaced the centre bit of exhaust but apparently not, I must've misheard, All they did was replace the cat unit & link pipe @179 + vat - £214.

They said the brackets to both the centre and backbox are weak and damaged due to dragging the exhaust, They're also corroded but they've only replaced the broken parts (cat & link).

£143 for both the middle bit and backbox replaced and fitted, I went along with this, So give or take £350 for cat and complete exhaust fitted.. :(

What kind of a garage prices up fixing an exhaust system to fix half of it and expect you to be happy. Stupid but you probably should have queried what the job was including.

Is that just standard parts? You're not too far off aftermarket system prices there.

I dunno what the parts are, Standard I assume as they didn't say otherwise.

I looked on eurocarparts and the rear silencer is £41 and the centre silencer is £45 so 86 + they charge £45 ph/hr labour, +£45 = £131. They want £143 inc vat which I dont think is too bad.

Not happy about the service though, Pretty poor, Wont be going back.

Probably the same kind that get nothing but whinging customers and accusations of unnecessary work when they give a quote for a complete system.

I wasn't given a quote for a complete system..

I called them this morning, They said its £216 all in to fix, To me, Thats it. For £216 it should be fixed.

It wasn't, It was made drivable with a probable chance the rear would fall off at some point or the middle would split and it sounded ****ed., I had to go back and point out to them that however they linked the cat link pipe to the centre silencer is shocking and not holding/smoking/stinks.
They go on to tell me its all weak and ****, Why didn't they give me the full whack on the phone this morning?

:o

Been and picked it up, Did a couple miles and had a look underneath, Was smoking/ burning smell coming from the connection to centre silencer and connection to backbox.

So I called them, They said its the silicone burning off any excess in the joints and it will stop after 50 or so miles.. Is this correct?

Car feels much much better, Feel's quite a bit more powerful than before (accelerating)

Advisories;

Oil residue on Engine.. (Last service was nov' 12) about 6-7k miles ago
N/S/R Shock absorber dust cover split..

Should I have any immediate concerns about them? Or can my wallet recover first? :/

LMAO

Classic line, It's all going through the books the same way. It's an INDY!

So?

If it's an indy who commits fraud financially remind me exactly why you would want to let them work on your car?

"Cash in hand?" *wink wink nudge nudge*
Save a tenner
Car goes wrong
"Yeah my car went wrong...."
No receipt, invoice, evidence....whose to say they even did work on your car

What you going to do, complain that you had your car worked on, paid cash in hand in exchange for no paper trail and now all of a sudden want something done about it?

Sound plan....real sound.
