Everquest Next reveal today

I loved Everquest and will probably play this, but who the hell came up with the Disney art style for the characters :/ that's just awful. The voxel stuff is a gimmick too, I just kept thinking GW2 when i was watching the 1 hour so live event vids. Weapon switching to new skills is not new, public quest (rally points), i wonder if this is going to be another instanced/phased mmo.

I want to get my SOE account signed up for beta but I cant and NO WAY IN HELL am I making a proseb one after the way PS2 players have been treated.

Sorry to be a noob but what did proseb do? I missed using them as I installed PS2 through Steam and could only make a direct SOE account.

Whelp, looks like the "next gen" of mmos think the way to go is action oriented like gw2/wildstar which in my opinion is going to be a multi-year long slog through and experiment in the mmo genre, an expirement that people are already getting tired of. By action mmo, it's usually touted when talking about abilities, 8 at a time? Sigh, these are really crappy decisions because you remove swathes of utility skills which made up some classes, such as support classes.
Um, the original EQ was a 8 slot hotbar :p (besides an 8 slot hotbar is perfect for consoles,no?

GW2 (no idea about Widlstar) was the evolution of hte '!' questing mechanic, the next step in that is to make the events mean something over time, not like GW2 where your back to the status quo 30minutes later

As for "collecting classes" I don't know, hopefully it isn't something you're easily able to just switch and more knowing in advance what you want to do.
Lastly, no exp/leveling but objectives, I hope this doesn't become too linear if you go a combat/non combat route.

Been confirmed class switching is out of combat, be interesting to see how tiers/horizontal power gain works opposed to the traditional level system/vertical power gain.

I'm quite looking forward to how SoE tackle what they laid down, we really need something 'new' in the genre, here's hoping EQN is it.

That concerns me, if things are like that they can't be finite right? It'll all be instanced, or get repaired over time when players aren't looking?
Imagine someone digs and find a cool dungeon with something really awesome. Now is it just empty for other players? I mean, I like the idea of unique stuff but it's so far from current gen ethos.
So I assume it's not as cool as it sounds.

I would assume from what the dude was saying yesterday is that over time the cavern you've found will repopulate, possibly with something worse, maybe Dwarves will set up camp there and find a rare vein of ore and build a settlement. Or it may well just be for you/your friends with you at the time of discovery.

Regarding the hole you fell down (and with any terrain destruction) the world repairs itself.

It'll all be instanced, or get repaired over time when players aren't looking?

For clarity (taken from Reddit):
*There will be phasing for certain parts of quests etc etc.
*I asked if any of the dungeons would be instanced and his response was 'sure'. The gist I got was that they have not settled on anything specific yet and are open to the options.
*undecided on player-player collision

i did quite like eq2 in the very early days, i remember everyone teaming up to do armour quests in open dungeons etc, then when wow came out they started changing everything and getting rid of all the group mobs in the open areas etc so quickly went back to ffxi, for some reason i really liked force grouping back then. since eq has always been more pve based, ill have a look since thats what im usually into.

Former Splitpaw server Unity guild member here, I remember running through Nektulos Forest and the Thundering Steppes was damned scary when they had heroic mobs wandering about, especially in Nek where it could be difficult to run them off without running into another spawn of heroics. It made recovering your spirit shard(s!) quite troublesome back in the day before they removed those as well.

No ! or feathers to point you at who can offer you quests either, you will just have to keep you eye out for people that look like they need help.

The more I hear about this the more I dislike it, it's like they're catering to the people who want everything, everywhere at any time when they want it. (The pretty much said that quote for quote). Only trying it can really tell.
Want muh tanks back and targeted healing! :p

This true? That is a feature i grew to dislike in GW2, I'm not sure i like the sound of it being in another MMO.

Yep it's true (unless they change it before release)
Will just become another GW2 dps race on bosses and anyone not conforming to dps specs and gear will be frowned upon and shunned just the same as GW2.

I hope to god they change it, I had high hopes for this game.
I've tanked MMO's for 14 years now, SOE dumping the trinity for EQ Next was most unexpected and I'm seriously disappointed.
Yes I can dps and do so in GW2 etc, but nothing compares to being smacked about by the hardest hitting bosses in raids for me.

In a way I can see where they are coming from, npc's should be 'smart enough' that they wouldn't just attack the dude smack talking their mothers. Guess we'll see if SoE can do better than aNet regarding boss fights.

I played eq1 for around 7 years, started about 2 weeks or so when it was released, there was hardly any information or maps at that time and it was great as it was my first MMO and i loved the no hand holding.

I remember at lvl 5 i died in west commons at night at the lake I got my friend to look for my corpse and he died a lvl15 dwarf, he was mad at me as he lost everything as the time limit at that times wasn't very long and he died a few times trying to get his corpse.

played eq2 a couple of times for about a year orso but never got into it like eq1.

Will look at this beta and see how it goes.

The hardship, risk, loss... they all fostered a really awesome community. People helped each other.

The lack of hand holding made players more aware, made them think and plan more. Versus today where people are navigating via GPS map and paying no attention to anything else.

The old days were days of real exploration and real teamwork. Today it is a mockery.

Great post, I agree with almost everything you said. I really think there must be room for a niche hardcore PvE/PvP raiding game that doesnt cater for the casual player.

There is, its called Everquest and they have just released expansion number 18 I believe. Oh and apparently 1 of the aborted game designs was a graphically updated version EQ. SoE decided it would be financially viable (probably right too)

Its mixed, they have been hacked a few times (as have SOE mind you).
Rewards and deals that SOE customers get Proseb ones haven't got or have got late at a lesser level, they also use a separate account system and money system which means the Station Cash I have in the back and my loyalty bonuses don't count if I move to proseb.
