Hi Guys, I'm contemplating getting a new rig with SSHD, overclocked i5 Haswell and 770gt GPU.

Perhaps an impossible question to answer, but how long do you think such a rig would last without upgrades and still be able to play the latest games at an acceptable framerate.

I'm no expert, but based upon what I've read my assumption is that the rate of progress from current to next generation CPU's and GPU's has slowed down a little, so I'm assuming that a new rig would last a few years!

I would`nt personally bother with an SSHD, I would sooner have an ssd and hdd.
There is no reason why the Haswell i5 and a 770 should`nt last you a few years at least.

The graphics card can be upgraded at will, but the 770 will not see a doubling in performance for 3 years imo.

Future processors will simply be adding more cores and slight single core improvements. Considering most games struggle to utilize 4 cores and the console benchmark being 6 cores*, a 4770K will not see a worthy gaming upgrade for at least 5 years.

*Both XBoxOne and PS4 will provide multitasking for video etc. It is expected that 1-2 cores will always be in use for background tasks allowing on the fly switching. As such, games will likely be targeted at 6 cores.

Personally, I would consider waiting for AMD's 9 series due out in October. The cards performance is stunning and if it is indeed true, it'll kick the pants off the 770/780.

Great advice, I didn't relise it was out in october. :)

It's well worth waiting to see what AMD have done, as rumours about it are very promising. :)

Why make stuff up?

Nobody knows ANYTHING about the new 9xxx series, especially not it's performance. The only thing out in the wild is ridiculous specification speculation which, for the most part - Is total trash.

The accepted consensus thus far is the new 9xxx series will be around 780/Titan performance +/- a small amount % wise...title dependant.

It will be a 28nm part that builds on the 7970, it's not going to 'kick the pants off' of anything.

I had this dilemma a few months back and decided to upgrade to that same combination, at 1680x1050 I can run everything pretty much maxed at +-60fps. I'd say go for a motherboard that supports SLI, so when it starts lacking grunt in several years you can just slot in another 770 for not much money at that point.

I agree, the 'kick the pants off' is an overstatment but AMD is catching up rapidly to the Nvivida flagships, with the 'appearent' performance of these.

As it's only 8 weeks away it's worth waiting to see what the deal is especially if youre splashing £300+ on a GPU.

If, IF, they catch up to 780/titan power its unlikely to be at 770 pricing.

Having said that if you weren't desperate to upgrade immediately there's no reason not to wait and see what amd have to offer. If nothing else there's a chance competition may see the daft prices come down a bit.
