Just watched this for the first time, brilliant film.

Call me fussy but did anyone else experience the picture format randomly changing throughout the film. Some shots it's in full 16:9 and fills the screen and others there are the black bars at the top and bottom. It actually really annoyed me. It's definitely not my TV it did the same whether I watched it on my PS3 or my Blu-Ray player.

Talking about the Blu Ray version.
 
Odd thing to do, but I cant say it annoyed me tbh.. He did it to capture each scene in the best way
 
Yep it's because of the IMAX scenes, not nearly as annoying as some of the fight scenes where Catwoman's heels turn into pumps and fists obviously fly a good foot away from recipient's faces. Again, impossible to un-see once you've spotted them.
 
Life of Pi did this too, watched it recently. The black bars went from being at the bottom, to the side. It's not really acceptable to be honest, can they not just format the sodding thing for a BR.

Not without losing parts of the shot, no. Not seen Life of Pi but I don't know why you'd end up with vertical black bars though, doesn't sound right. The horizontal ones were added for effect.
