Asus ROG GTX 770 Poseidon May Sail to Retail in September-Things are about to get wet and wild

You don't see too many graphics cards that combine a standard heat sink with a water block. One of the most recent companies to take this is approach is Asus, which offered up a sneak peek of its upcoming GeForce GTX 770 Poseidon graphics card under its Rebublic of Gamers (ROG) brand. It features the firm's new DirectCU H2O design which can be used in a standard air or liquid cooled setup, offering gamers a bit of flexibility as their rigs change over time.

Due a new GPU can't wait for the reviews when its released.:)

Are those barbs fixed or can they be changed? Could be a lot of people buy these only to find they can't fit the side panel on after the loop is installed. Those barbs need to be 90 degree rotary fittings really.

There's no barbs on it, it has G1/4 ports, you can use 90deg fittings if you want/need to.

Is the block a fullcover or only GPU?

Both, depending on how you term it (this caused some debate with XSPC block a while ago iirc), the block covers the GPU/RAM/VRM, and the heat-sink sections over the VRM's look very heavy duty. But, only the GPU appears to have liquid pathway. Because the block is essentially a big hunk of metal this will have very little affect on VRM/RAM temps.

I can not see the point of this card, I don't think it will do anything particularly well as it is a compromise in everything.

The only thing it will do well is empty your bank account.:D

I'm planning on getting two :) I have been waiting for these since their announcement months ago.

The way I see it, it is a compromise yes, but so is water cooling cards in general, just in a different way. The Poseidon runs 10deg cooler than reference under air and 30 deg cooler under water, so its not like the card has to be water cooled (ofc it would be dumb to buy it new not to), hell if you water cooled it and ran the fan at silent the card will have a lower system heat dump than a normal water cooled 770 but no extra noise.

Whenever you water cool a card you make the compromise that you spend money on a water block (~£100 for a block for a high end 770) that you will never get back as when the time comes to eventually replace the card nobody will want to buy an old high end card and WC it, so the block is just scrap. Not only do these cards not have that issue but the person who eventually picks up a used poseidon years from now gets a cool looking 770 card with > reference clocks and < reference temps, that's a win in my book and should help the card maintain a > average resale value.

Due to the water only flowing over the GPU performance is obviously going to be somewhere in between a FC block and a universal GPU block, but its that kind of versatility that makes the card great, and with any luck just like moving a universal GPU block from card to card I will one day be able to sell on my 770 Poseidons and replace them with 1080 Poseidons :D

If you do get a couple of them, is there any chance of you doing some runs for the Heaven 4 bench thread. It will be really interesting to see how they go compared to the normal air cooled GTX 770s.:)

Why are they bothering to release this in September if 20nm AMD cards that will make this obsolete are being released in October? :p

I don't think so either. I don't know why there are so many rumours saying there will be though. :p

Rumours/mis information are great for stopping people buying the competitions product.:D

The one that is annoying me at the moment is

MSI are launching the MSI 780 lightning tomorrow:) (but we don't know when there will be product in the shops).:(

However the thing is 20nm or not, AMD's next gen card in that price bracket will be faster, considering the 770's performance only matches the 7970 GHz Edition which was available at nearly 14 months ago, in the same price bracket as well...
