New guts (Mobo, CPU, RAM) what to buy?

It's that time again ..... again!! Bit out of the loop lately. I know I'd like a Gigabyte mobo as I've bought these for years & have never had a problem. Then of course there's RAM for it, at least 8GB. I'd also like an i5 CPU. Everything else I'm going to use from my existing computer, although I may also buy an SSD.

I'm confused (as usual) about socket types & chipset types. I'd be on a budget, I don't do a great deal of gaming these days so I don't need anything to set the World on fire. I do a lot of music stuff (Propellerhead's Reason) photo & video editing. I'm also looking to spend as little as possible .... if possible!! So what might my options be for;

• Mobo: Gigabyte __________ (socket type?)
• CPU: Intel i5__________(chipset?)
• RAM: __________

Usually I spend around 100 on a mobo. I'm guessing an i5 will be pushing 150 with the RAM anywhere from 50 to 100. So lets say anywhere from 300 to 500 total.

Christ, how times have changed. I was gaming just fine on my current rig (*see signature) when I first built it and for time after that. Looking at the bit I picked I thought it would be just fine for gaming, should I so choose & add a nice juicy gfx card (still partial to the odd FPS & a few rounds of TF2 )

I would go with a faster base clock though.

I don't think I really know what that means!! Are you talking about the speed of the CPU?

I've never Overclocked before so I'm not really concerned about that. But I'm curious to know why the above bits couldn't be overclocked?

Core i-series CPUs are different architecturally to your existing S775 kit. No longer can you just bump up the FSB for a quick overclock.

If you get a K type CPU and a motherboard with Z-series chipset then the multipliers are unlocked for easy overclocking.
