13/63 plate

Why offer a vague piece of advice but not finish it?

There is little value in having the latest plate outside personal gratification, if that is your thing. Having a new plate 3 weeks later will have zero impact on the value of your car when you come to sell it, car dealers moved on from registration plates a while back. Also, buying a new Kia is not a sensible move as it will haemorrhage cash as they are usually a high depreciation brand.

To be fair I don't get it either. I don't even think I'd pay £2k more to have a brand new Kia. It's just some car - it's probably quite good but it's not as if you are raiding the exhuaustive options list for your exact spec is it. Its just 5 metres of 'reasonably priced softroader'. One thats 4 months old is basically exactly the same thing anyway.

Spend the £2k saving on taking the slightly used one to the Austrian Alps and back via a few nice hotels. Far nicer experience than saying 'Yea, I ordered a new Kia not a 3 month old Kia, go me' :p

Sorry for the noob question - this is the first time I've ever bought a car of any real value - but say we bought a car from a random dealer, would we still go to Wessex Kia for repairs under warranty or would we need to go back to the original dealer?

Thanks.

Yeah looked at the ix35. Looks ok but not as good as the Sportage as personal preference, plus more expensive and 5 year warranty. Otherwise decent car.

I work in a dealer, and that's just not true. Two exact cars, only difference is the plate. The newer one will be more expensive.

You may sell it for more, you wont offer more for a car that is 3 weeks younger.

Yes they will.

All the guides that dealers base their prices on are split into plates and a 63 plate will be worth more than a 13 plate when selling and all other factors being equal e.g. mileage, condition etc.

I've emailed the sales guy at the dealership (I'm away all tomorrow so can't call him) and asked if he can do discounts/add ons:

- Free paint and interior protect as it's an ex-display model (albeit 3 days) and needs to be driven from Gloucester
- Discount for paying by debit or BACS instead of credit card due to lower merchant fees
- Discount for taking the car now as a 13 plate and paying in August as opposed to 63/September

Anything else I could use as leverage?

1. They may throw this in to get a deal
2. Doubtful. Most places add on the merchant fee (1.5%) if you pay by CC so the chances of discount here are 0
3. Possibly. It depends on how close the dealership/salesman is to meeting targets.

What you also have to bare in mind is, if you are part exchanging your car, it may take a drop in book price for next month so you may end up paying more.

But if you take a car earlier you are likely to get a better deal up front! I know as I've done it more than once!

Totally depends on the car. They would have got a discount from Kia because it's a demo which may mean they won't be able to discount it further.
Not a chance. They'll charge you circa 1.5% for CC. BACS is a pita for everyone. Unless it's a small backstreet dealer then cash won't get a special discount. Cash isn't king anymore.
This is the best bet. You're early in the month though, drag your heels and they'll chase you and offer a good deal towards the end.

I think this email was a mistake - the only credible thing in is the last point. The paint/interior protection is completely worthless, it exists only to generate margin for the dealer. As a product its poor and not worth it. The fact you've requested it will I think now mark you out as an easy target for the salesman.

Nobody is going to give you a discount for debit card instead of credit card, instead dealers simply do not accept credit card for car purchase transactions unless you pay the merchent fees.

The only thing in that last that might work is the 13 plate instead of a 63 plate, and this is something I'd suggest might yield a good discount.

They will probably 'agree' to the other points but it will be meaningless discount at a lower level than you'd probably have got anyway.

Purchased a pre reg 13 plate (delivery mileage) Toyota Aygo Fire Aircon (5 door) yesterday for my daughter and got just under £2000 discount of the price, £9000 bargain.

He'll come back and say "I will throw in the first point, as a gesture, but I'm going to struggle on the other points"...
