I'm after some advice/thoughts on this interesting decision I've come to.

My 2011 V8 Vantage comes out of warranty at the end of the year and will cost me ~$10k to add a two year extended including inspection fees and servicing. I do also have a potential $5-7k clutch bill on the horizon as the Sport Shift clutches are made of paper and could go anywhere from 10k-40k miles.

I've been contemplating my options instead of throwing down the $10k and decided to go drive an F-Type V8S today. I liked the car, the noise is probably even better than my Aston but am slightly concerned that I'd be making a backwards step. Yes, it's faster but Jaguar is a prestige brand, not an exotic like AM.

Pro's would be that it's a 2014 car with 4 years of warranty. It sounds fantastic, looks good and is probably easier to drive than my Aston.

Con's, well it's not an exotic, it has far less drama and sense of occasion than the Aston Martin and probably the kicker, I have to add $15k to my Aston to make it happen.

$15k isn't a big deal but my Aston sticker price was $148k, compared to $101k for the Jag. Obviously, this means I'm paying a reasonable sum to move to a far, far cheaper car. I should mention however that I didn't pay MSRP for the AM, so I didn't take the huge depreciation hit, in fact I'll be getting out for only $3k less than I paid for it.

I know the Aston is technically an inferior car but there's something very special about it; the brand, the image and the looks of it. I'm kind of at an impasse and was wondering what you would do.

I would! :)

Boss has just got a V6S and it's gorgeous! As for image and looks, I think the F-Type is one of the best looking cars ever made and has even more presence than the Vantage. Everyone stares at you when you're out in it, although I know that's partly because it's new and there aren't many around.

first world dilemmas right here :p

grab the jag it looks lush and I wouldn't consider an aston more exotic than one after watching last weeks top gear, if anything you get a better driving experience, sound and warranty - win, win & win

Spend $10k to keep an Aston running or spend $15k to get a Jag, which you admit is less special.

I spend $10k and keep the Aston, who cares about whether it is 2011 or 2014, it is an Aston Martin...

Tough call and I'd like both in my life at some point. But for me the Aston just edges it.

Jaaaaag!! V8S is a beautiful machine. I would do it and if i missed the exotic AM, sell after a couple of years and go back to something exotic.

I had an aston for two weeks, was the most underwhelming experience of my life. they are honestly not that good, and i put at least 3000 miles under my belt so gave it a decent chance to give me a semi. They aren't that fast (I had the db9), they aren't built that well (lol volvo satnav) and they are definitely not reliable (broke down three times in as many days)- all in all I'd flog it immediately should i wake up and find I'd won one in a drug induced game of high stakes poker, for me they are just not all they are cracked up to be.

You had no qualms with owning two Datsuns, so I'm sure a Jag ticks more than enough style/cool/epic points!

I'd probably take the Jag, the F-Type is just stunning, inside and out.

The Vantage is a massively more exciting car than the DB9, especially with the newer 4.7 engine. I found the DB9 dull too hence why we sold ours so quickly but the Vantage is a different kettle of fish.

I really don't know. I would be inclined to sell on the Aston, as I'm not a huge fan, but there are things about the F-type that would equally put me off.

Is there anything else on the cards? Out of the two I'd probably go with the F-type though, if push came to shove.

I'd love to be in your position again, for you it's win, win

given the same opportunity I'd chuck the AM without a moments notice, its dull, been there done that car and its tired. the f-type is new, full of gear, the right engine, the right spec, the right everything. You ask for opinions, that's mine :)

Of course, totally valid too :)

Obviously I won't lose a huge amount more on the AM in the coming years since they seem to plateau at about $60k even for the oldest ones. I stand to lose quite a considerable amount more on the Jag though if the market doesn't feel $100k is "good value".

Absolutely. At the moment there are almost none around but it *is* a mass produced car. I don't see it being long until there are significantly more of these around than Aston Martins. That's not an issue but the uniqueness and rarity of the AM is definitely one of the reasons pulling me to keep it.

fap fap and sex wee everywhere

and a good portion of population paste for good measure :D

If i was in a position were i had to make this decision, i can wholeheartedly say i'd jump for the Jag, however i dont have any emotional attachment to, or finacial investment in the aston that you may have.

You have a 12C for the exotic. Id definitely go for the F Type, especially as it won't cost you considerable sums to change. The Jag is a great car.
