Any have a milk intolerance

I was told earlier today that I almost certainly have a severe intolerance to cow's milk causing my digestive system spaz out.

I was wondering if anyone with a similar problem could suggest substitutes for putting milk in tea and coffee etc?
My wife has a milk intolerance which caused big problems with her stomach. She now uses Lactofree milk. It tastes just like normal milk but with no lactose, it has none of the dodgy tummy side-effects :). Only downside is that it is slightly more expensive than normal milk, but worth it if you enjoy milk.

Almond milk is nice it's what I have as I don't have any animal products, milk is very bad for you anyway, it contains a whole host of hormones us humans shouldn't eat!

ditto - I've got a bit of an intolerance and have the lactofree range of milk and Pure butter to satisfy my tea and toast cravings.

Having said that through slow persistence with eating cheese and chocolate in small quantities i'm almost fine with most stuff. Fake (burger) cheese and yogurt however really disagree with me for some reason.

The problem is that people with lactose intolerance don't make enough lactase in their small intestine, so the lactase (which is sugar), doesn't get digested, and ends up in your large intestine where the gut bacteria there starts to ferment it. Hence bloating, cramping, diarrhea. As you cut out milk products, you get even lower tolerance as your body produces even less lactase.

Some people say you can change your gut bacteria by eating little bits of cheese throughout the day so it can handle lactose, but that's never been proved to work, and if you're truely lactose intolerant, you're not going to start making lactase again. Those people that do are probably not really intolerant (a lot of people think they have an intolerance, when they haven't had the test and really aren't).

It happens to a lot of people when they get older, especially in countries where they don't drink lots of milk. They haven't spent a few thousand years evolving more lactase in their guts by drinking the milk from an animal we're not really designed to drink milk from.

You can buy lactose free milk.

Soya milk also is an alternative but I find that horrid.

Rice milk and almond milk are also good and nutritious.

I also carry around some lactase pills, so if I'm out or have something milky/cheesy, I'm not going to explode a few hours later. You can get them from Holland & Barretts.

I need to try some pills as the drops are doing nothing for me any more. If anything they just make drinks taste worse!
