Hi all,

I have found a company who searches and looks in to tax rebates for you, they have gone through my details and sent me a letter stating

"Thank you for your recent inquiry, I have now had a chance to look over your details and assess your eligibility to claim a tax refund. After careful review it would appear an overpayment of tax has occurred and a rebate would almost certainly be owed to you". etc etc this goes over a 4 year period. In the last 4 years I have pretty much been in the same job, up until I finished June 2013

I have to fill in a few application forms, they go on a no rebate no fee policy, think its something like 14%.

I recently spoke directly to HMRC after trying to get through to them (took ages on the phone) and asked them to do a check in the last tax year, they said I have paid the right amount up to the exact penny.

Could I undercut this company and go direct to HMRC? or does this 3rd party company know something I don't?

Yes, they just hope people are lazy and/or don't know they can just chase HMRC themselves so they get the fee.

I'm a teacher and I know my union fees can be reclaimed, and any work specific clothing that needs to be provided by staff (PE teacher for example, who needs astro trainers/football boots/rugby boots/cross country trainers just for footwear for example).

see the tax man for details.

Could this be part of it?

Its pretty simple to work out...just get your P60's from the last few years and work it out? Will take about 45 secs on a calculator..lol

Cool, I will go through listentotaxman and have a peek and contact HMRC directly. I need to try and dig out P60's

I think its because he couldn't get a PPI claim in for any of his accounts in the PPI thread he is chasing this way

I don't know why you seem to be saying this like it's a bad thing, if you're happy to let other people have your money for no reason then let me know and you can send me some.

generally if you've been in the same job on a steady wage, your tax will be correct.

These companies just mass mail people and hope to get lucky with a few people.

Do it yourself - it's very simple.

Bit like PPI - call the bank you had the loan/credit card with - they will do the rest. No fees/costs like these stupid PPI claim companies.

Other people do not have my money as I have worked out exactly what I should and shouldn't have.

Indeed. I would advise for him to keep more detailed information on his finances though.

Just found it a bit amusing that he was chasing all sorts of people to see if he could claim PPI was mis sold in the PPI thread and when that was a no go he is now looking for a tax rebate now.

What do you do? The rebate company are probably just going to apply for a laundry uniform allowance or something, its worth about £8 a year
