Boycott Sochi 2014 because of LGBT offences

A modern day Hitler and Jesse Owens.

hardly...
owens said "Hitler had a certain time to come to the stadium and a certain time to leave." "It happened he had to leave before the victory ceremony after the 100 meters. But before he left I was on my way to a broadcast and passed near his box. He waved at me and I waved back. I think it was bad taste to criticize the 'man of the hour' in another country."

Owens was allowed to travel with and stay in the same hotels in Germany as whites, while at the time African Americans in many parts of the United States had to stay in segregated hotels while traveling

Owens said,

"Hitler didn't snub me – it was FDR who snubbed me. The president didn't even send me a telegram.
Hitler sent Owens a commemorative inscribed cabinet photograph of himself.Honors were not bestowed upon Jesse Owens by either President Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) or his successor Harry S. Truman during their terms. In 1955, President Dwight D. Eisenhower (himself an athlete of note) honored Owens by naming him an "Ambassador of Sports."
it seems hitler treated him better than his own country did

I thought the Olympics was supposed to be non-political?

I don't care about the Winter Olympics so boycotting it would be a non gesture on my part.

Absolutely needs boycotting. I'm fed up of how the world just lets people/countries get away with stuff. All due to political BS. Time we had a collective world with a massive pair of balls.

When when the BRICS are running the show do we play to their drums or our own? Shall we just have some Sport?

watch last nights episode of the last leg and you'l have a good chuckle about it arknor. especially the end :p

A modern day Hitler and Jesse Owens.

Owens was treated far worst by his own president and country than his was by Germany and its Fuhrer. Hitler did not 'snub' Owens, it is a persistent myth. He snubbed all winners after he was told on day one that he must personally congratulate all winners or none at all. He chose the latter and Owens won his gold the next day.

However when he came home, he couldn't get a job and was declared bankrupt within a few years. Roosevelt also refused to publicly acknowledge him....

Ironically, the real snub of Owens came from his own president. Even after ticker-tape parades for Owens in New York City and Cleveland, President Franklin D. Roosevelt never publicly acknowledged Owens' achievements (gold in the 100 meter, 200 meter, 400 meter relay, and long jump). Owens was never invited to the White House and never even received a letter of congratulations from the president. Almost two decades passed before another American president, Dwight D. Eisenhower, honored Owens by naming him “Ambassador of Sports” — in 1955.

Well, that's not for you to decide.

Democratic; perhaps. Right; matter of opinion.

For the record, I don't agree with it, but I think the world should be wary of telling an entire country the size of Russia that they're wrong in their democratic decisions.

Nonsense !
Sam Harris done a great TED talk about this and I totally agreed with him (makes a change as I'm not his biggest fan normally :p )

Just because something might have the support from the majority doesn't alter the fact that it's immoral, unethical or whether we can past judgment on it.
Bigotry and discrimination of ANY form is clearly wrong and demonstrably unfair, it should be called out and challenged wherever it rears it's ugly head

I have seen a few very disturbing videos on ******** where LGBT people have been seriously assaulted in Russia for doing nothing other than being who they are. Russia should be thoroughly ashamed of this and unless people keep telling them that they will think this repugnant view of LGBT people is acceptable

Beatings, murders and humiliations are ignored by the police. Any defence or sane discussion of homosexuality is against the law. Any statement, for example, that Tchaikovsky was gay and that his art and life reflects this sexuality and are an inspiration to other gay artists would be punishable by imprisonment.

The punishment is a fine. That statement is only punishable by fine if spread to minors (under the age of 18).

£80-£100 for citizens
£800-£1,000 for officials
£8,000-£10,000 for legal entities

Internet has really blown this out of proportion, it seems like 90% of people now think that all gays are imprisoned in Russia for being so, which is a complete nonsense.

That said boycotting is a terrible way to deal with it. Going there and spreading good message would be more effective albeit more dangerous.

some of putins pics point to LGBT being a little to close to home

Maybe we should just send LGBT competitors?

This is what I read...it is a law against promoting homosexuality to children, enforced with fines. Didn't we have something similar not long ago?

Now it seems everyone thinks they are lining up homosexuals in Red Square and shooting them by their thousands!!!

The severity of it is really irrelevant. It screams of inequality, and moreover it screams over inequality over something that you have no choice in, which is just insanity and the same as racism.

There's no need for them to blow it out of proportion; the Olympics simply shouldn't be held in such a discriminant country.

What about the UK? the Extreme Porn Law clearly discriminates against people with kinky and now illegal fetishes. I didn't see anybody defending the right of people with a thing for Rape and Anal Fisting in 2012...

What about the USA, should their misaligned stance against Gary Marriage rule them out?

What about China, Bahrain, Abu Dhabi hosting the F1? Or indeed the Indian F1 and their social inequalities of class?

That is blowing it out of proportion...more effective to use the platform of The Olympics to peacefully promote equality and inclusion.

Divisive actions such as boycotts or removing the Olympics only cause more disention and division and will not help LGBT rights (althoughI am not sure that simply not promoting homosexuality to children is akin to racism, segregation, apartheid or other more active and far more serious forms of discrimination, the law doesn't ban homosexuality or discriminate actively against homosexuals, it only bans the giving of homosexual information to children.) is in Russia, if anything, given historical Russian siege mentality, it will only make it worse.

One day we'll live in a world free of intolerance towards people called Gary.

No no no no no no no, you are so so so wrong. It is about time we had a register of all Gary's so we know at anyone time where they secrete themselves :mad::mad:

Do you really want your children within 100 yards of a Gary! Do you?!:mad:

I support Russia on the issue. They aren't banning being homosexual after all, but what I suppose could be termed as the 'gay agenda' i.e. political homosexuality. As long as that is all they are doing, then what is the problem? They are a democratic nation and this is the will of their people. If you want to boycott something, how about Middle Eastern oil? They execute gays over there.

And the Jesse Owen thing is daft, as another poster highlighted. The foundation of Hitlers views were not that exceptional at the time, where even the US had segregation.

People mock but it's true, look at all the murdering "Garys" - Gilmore, Ridgway, Heidnik, Vinter, Dobson, Sampson, Hilton, Grinhaff and Gerlach.

Not to mention Gary Glitter

I wouldn't be surprised if most of those Garys were ginger too.
