Last paragraph:
"Last night a spokesman for the Commission denied that the certificates would be mandatory.

He said the idea was to make it easier for people who move to other EU countries and have to prove their identity.

At present, the different languages on national certificates were causing problems for migrants, he said.

He added: ‘It is plain wrong to suggest that the use of these certificates will become mandatory as the text of the proposal is absolutely clear that the certificates are an optional alternative but not in any way a replacement for nationalcertificates.’"

So who is telling mistruths, the European Commission or the Daily Mail
?

Does it matter? I'd be surprised if the Daily Mail are being accurate but they act like having the EU flag on your birth certificate is in some way a terrible thing.

Also:
Plan is 'a Brussels plot' to brand Britons EU citizens, minister warns
Is just hilarious. What a terrible plot.

Edit: This is the EU press release on the issue. Makes perfect sense to me.

The DM lying?

Never would they dream of lying in their headline, then having something that directly contradicts it in the last line of the article...never I say.

Well unless the day has a y in it somewhere.

The DM is a bastion of truth!

in most cases, lol daily mail would be the appropriate response, however this is exactly the way they introduced european driving licences, start them as optional, give it a few years then remove the choice of the native paperwork...

We do still have native paperwork though for DL's, don't we?

Except they are not driving licenses any more, they are compulsory identity cards (with picture) that have to be updated every ten years.

When I took my test I did not agree to having to pay for an ID card twenty years later

As far as I'm concerned it proves I passed my test, this is a relatively minor permit and my identity can be proved in other ways if required. The government made a big fuss about not having ID cards, yet what else is the new driving licence but a flipping ID card

For a compulsory ID card they aren't very useful since you don't need to carry them....or have one.

No, the photcard licence is based on the european model, as are the categories and restrictions with only minor variations (compare our photocard with that of mainland europe countries such as germany). indeed the advent of the photocard licence was a direct result of the requirements

there was an additonal directive passed relatively recently for further standardisation, including requiring smart card licences of a standard format across both the eu and eea.

edit: new directive is 2006/126/EC

Another good reason to leave the EU. I'm English not a bloody European. Glad I never updated my old driving licence ;)

It's compulsory to buy a new one, as yes you are right, I wouldn't need to have one if I didn't need to have a car (which is just about everyone). And if I'm out of the house then I'm likely to be in a car, so it's much the same thing.
Mainly it's having to pay for something which isn't necesssary (outside of some jobsworths head) that annoys me.
