I went for the Msi Twin frozr lll 7950 + games to replace my Msi 6970 Twin Frozr ll and i have looked at the Anantech bench and it doesn't look that much of an upgrade !
What is anybody's experience with this upgrade ?

It's a huge upgrade! You will get over twice the frame rate in some games when it's OC'd. Take the anandtech bench with a pinch of salt, as it doesn't incorporate things like driver performance updates and factory overclocks.

e.g. I just looked at a BF3 benchmark @ 1920x1080 4xAA - 6970, 40fps, 7950 OC, 75fps. And this was done before the big performance driver updates for the 7000 series over the last few months. A more recent benchmark shows 83fps for the same settings.

That's pretty impressive :)

Most of the benches out there are pre 12.11, which as mentioned was a massive performance driver update from AMD.

Put it this way, a high clocked 7950/70 will just about top dual 6950/70's :)

Well I moved from an overclocked 6950, so not quite the same but close! to a 7950, even at stock there was a clear improvement, now my 7950 has a decent enough overclock for now (1150/1350) I cant be far off double the performance in certain games/situations

Well worth it

It'll also use quite a lot less power, and almost certainly run cooler and quieter.

Bear in mind that the 7950 isn't a refresh of the 6970, it's a new generation - so it's a big leap.

Most definitely worth it. I also went from a 6950 to a 7950 and the difference was very noticeable. Currently on a GTX 780 and I suppose its a bit faster than the 7950 but the 7950 is a fantastic card. I should have stuck with it and spent the money elsewhere

I have 2 of this cards... they are great...
for sure if you need extra performance you can overclock the card to 1100/1400 (probably it will do without problems)

I am very impressed with the card so far with much better performance than the 6970 and a lot quieter too :)

I was recently looking at the anandtech comparison charts for the 6970 and the 7950. I was puzzled why the 6970 was half the price of the 7950 on a certain auction website, given that their performance was shown by anandtech to be so close.

So there was a driver update that significantly increased 7950 performance significantly? If it was so significant I wonder why the benchmarks haven't been redone. Does anyone have a link to a 7950 review carried out after the driver refresh that contains benchmarks for 1920x1200, or even 1080p?

6950x2 crossfire is as same as a 7970.
Tesselation based games and such will be much better on the 7000 series due to that improvement.
fps will be in the same ballpark either with a 7950 or a 7970 as the 6950 crossfire but have a new tech arch that simply put is twice the performance of a 6950.

everyone I seen that gone from a crossfired 6950 set up to 7900 series says the same thing, its as fast but single card wins everytime due to less hassle.
techpowerup has some numbers

2x6970 = 1x7950/7970 and 2x6970 would use double of the power as well.

About the drivers, the last driver came to fix an issue with crossfire and usually new drivers perform better than old drivers. If you compare the same game with the last driver and with an one year old driver you can tell the difference. It also depends on the game... some games get no performance increase, some get 10% or more.
