moving over to apple... is it worth it?

Exactly.

I'm at the point where I don't think I'll bother replacing the desktop. I miss my mechanical keyboard though, but thats all. The Air is just so good.

I will always keep a desktop for gaming, until I get bored of gaming which I don't see happening. But on a laptop I think it is the best solution, I would love to see an Air with a 1080p display, or even just IPS, the screen is the one thing I feel it is very lacking when compared to most of the competition.

I've recently gone from MacBook Pro to iMac/Air setup.

I love the air. It's so nice. Incredibly quick and lasts a stunning 12 hours! I'm selling my iPad because of the portability too.

The day I ever feel like that would be the day I would stop using computers period. There really is no substitute in this world or the next for a Desktop whether it is a Windows machine or a Mac. However, for me to consider replacing my iMac with a mobile device is the stuff of nightmares - truly.

I often think people who do replace their Desktop for a mobile solution never really needed a "proper computer" in the first place. I often refer to these people as media consumers.

I love all my previous apple devices and my iphone 5, but I'd just never use an apple laptop. I won't deny they are very stylish and sleek machines though.

Unless gaming is a priority then how about docking the laptop/MBP/Air to a screen? Best of both worlds.

Those people don't need a time capsule either.

Plus, I see very little benefit at the moment of owning a desktop. I'd use it only for gaming or very occasional work. But as we saw in the last thread, you won't be able to accept this.

Just don't install Windows on it like some do... :)

Why?

A MacBook isn't some mythical machine, its just a laptop made by Apple... Same way an iMac is just a PC, no matter what the ardent apple supporters say...

As for the ops question, there aren't really any benefits, but aren't really any negatives either. My main personal machine is an Air (running OSX) and I also have a windows desktop and workstation at work. They work slightly differently but do the same things, all with their quirks (for example OSX has some annoying limitations and finder and preview can be major pain in the bums).

As for being better for photos and videographers, that's personal preference of the user. It may have been different before but now both run in the same way and run mostly identical software.

Try one out, see what you think. It's always nice to have a change and apple do do nice laptops (but so do others manufacturers for similar prices). Don't expect miracles or some kind of enlightening as its just another OS with its quirks, like Linux or windows.

Edit: one thing you will have a new found respect for is control panel in windows. For many things you would usually just go into control panel for in windows (show/hide files being an important one) you need to use terminal and lots of text commands to do the same thing with in OSX. IME OSX is far more like Linux with a UI on top than windows, which was built from the ground up to be consumer software. That means anything not standard (like changing desktop images) is usually just a few clicks away in windows but needs terminal in OSX.

I use a MBP for work, the first thing I did was create a Windows and Linux VM. On a corporate level its still way behind the other OS's in terms of drivers and supports.

Oh, and one more thing...

Just been reminded of one of the biggest pet hates I have with apple, due to my iPad just doing it... Dropping wifi signal... Apple gear and wifi have a love hate relationship. Get used to wifi just randomy dropping from their devices as it happens quite a lot, even when they say they have "fixed" it wih an update.

If Apple did an mbp or air 13 with a matte screen which could run two external screens, had better connectivity than the current air, and had half decent graphics for occasional gaming then I'd jump at it and sell my desktop.

I guess what I'm looking for is an mbp 13 retina but with a matte screen and slightly better graphics.

Yeah, I also had very weird WiFi issues, they seem to have 40mz channel too so I have to use 20mhz exclusively for apple devices which is a bumber.

Connectivity is a pain, have to have a converter for Ethernet, vga and so on at work gets really annoying, and quiet expensive.

For me personally the software is a decent middle ground between Ubuntu and windows when I'm developing, I get something close to a Lamp stack, and a decent terminal, if they would let me I would choice to use Ubuntu at work. But what I really like is the hardware and windows OEM are just now catching up with things like the Samsung Series 9 and the Asus zenbooks looking beautiful too.

As said earlier given your usage you possibly never needed a computer as such in the first place. I on the other hand do as I often work from home or bring a lot of work home to complete. Doing this on anything other than a desktop would not really be practical. When I have finished the work I can then browse the web on my lovely iMac screen. :D

I can honestly say I have never heard this mentioned before. On of the plus points of Apple for me is how all my Apple products work beautifully together whether by wi-fi or wired. A dropped connection is unheard of and I suspect your fault lies elsewhere.

You can't use a beautiful clean and clutter free imac in starbucks or on a train, etc.

I have taken my iPad into the garden once or twice, but that has been the limit of my foray into mobile computing, apart from my smartphone.

I've never been in Starbucks either.

I need a computer that does the same as an iMac, but is portable.
