Credit Cards - What do you use & what do you get?

I just use my regular Lloyds card and sometimes my virgin one if a big payment as it has a high limit.

paid of monthly.

Question

I did a balance transfer to a tesco card with no interest for 18 months or something like that.

Anyway, I set up online account and the direct debit on the 10th, due date being 24th. Just checked my account and can't see the dd , checked my tesco acc and see a late payment charge! I checked payment options and can see my dd set up all correct.

I phoned them and complained saying this will mark down my credit file now etc etc, she said she removed the late payment and the charge from my account and talked some bull about not giving enough time for the dd.

Question is, will this still likely appear on my credit file and wreck my `score'?

DD do take time to set up, and you would have been advidsed to keep paying manually until the advised date.

As to the rest no idea.

Balls, never known a dd take more than two weeks to set up, even tesco quoted me 10 days themselves as absolute max.

It's not likely too, however if you're concerned do a 30 day experian trial or whatever and check. If it is there you might be able to phone up and have it removed, or worst case scenario send a written letter. The fact they gave your money back is an admission of accepting a genuine mistake and so there should be no penalty to you at all.

Often a DD won't 'kick-in' until the following statement regardless of whether it's been given clearance.

I have a credit card question.

If you have a credit card, use it for a little while then pay your bill and don't use it, is that bad for your credit rating?
I have a card which i haven't used for almost a year now but it has the highest limit on it by far, so i've kept it for a "just in case" situation.

I primarily use an AmEx Plat, for the following benefits:

- OK Avios earning rate (earn MRs, convert to Avios at promotional rates)
- Oneworld Sapphire - lounge access, fast check-in, fast security, fast boarding
- Priority Pass - independant lounge access
- Access to Eurostar lounges at St Pancras and Gare du Nord
- Concierge - useful when you need something and can't sit on the phone calling people to get it
- Travel insurance

I fly anywhere between 2 and 6 times a month, almost always in BA economy class (we have a >=4 hr business class rule), so the Oneworld tier is virtually priceless.

The AmEx is also very flexible for 'emergency' use due to it having no traditional credit limit. AmEx have confirmed, for example, I could withdraw over £10,000 of currency from an ATM if I wanted to. If it's 2 AM and you need to buy 100g of cocaine, that facility can be a lifesaver.

Apparently having the credit available to you but not being used is looked on favourably by other lenders according to what people have said on here.

Pretty much the exact reason I went for it. Especially the 10k coke buying at 2am. Although, smaller French retailers don't often accept amex. Tards. Or coke.

I had an old Halifax Gold card that i paid off and stopped using for 6 months. Then they just closed my account for no good reason  I think it's due to the fact they thought they couldn't make anymore money off me

2 days later i got a Barclaycard with a far lower APR :D

One good thing is that AmEx acceptance in the UK is presently very high, with in my experience only a few odd places not accepting it. They also run a bunch of 'scam' type deals, such as 'Shop Small'; the other week I and 3 friends bought dinner at a restaurant and then drinks at a bar using an AmEx each. Result? £40 cash refund from AmEx for the night. Pretty good!

Does anyone know of any decent balance transfer cards available at the moment? Basically I want to put off paying any more on this card until I get my student loan in :)

Interesting.
So if closed it, i would have less credit available and that would look bad?

I have a Barclay Card, which purpose is to start building my credit rating. My limit is only £400 therefore I actually look forward to my bill so I can clear it and start using it again.

Best advice I use is:http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/credit-cards/balance-transfer-credit-cardshttp://

There is currently a Barclay Card deal for Balance transfer length of 28 months at 0% with 3.5% fee.

However Personally I would be going for:

Lloyds TSB Card with Balance transfer length of 24 months at 0% and fee: 1.5%!

:D

cant really find many places to use amex so havent bothered
so being limited to visa/MC i dont have much choice.

mbna play.com 1% cashback which is my main card paid in full
halifax 0% for 12 months on BT with 1k on it
tesco card for shopping and fuel
just cancelled barclaycard as offers expired

dont use airmiles so not sure what to go for as probably going to spend a decent whack in next few months

currently looking to get a new card for cashback

Halifax Reward Clarity Card - overseas spending and any big purchases (i.e. that would take my monthly balance over £300)
Barclaycard World Mastercard (converted from Egg Money World Mastercard a number of years ago) - general day-to-day spending card with 1% cashback flat rate

AMEX Green Corporate - no limit but only for company expenses like business flights, hotels, subsistence, etc.

Currently I have:

A Halifax Claritry for withdrawing and spending overseas
A BOS std card that I used for a balance transfer, also gives cashback but I don't really use it
A Nationwide card with 0% for a balance transfer from the BOS card that I didn't bother fully clearing

Oh and a corporate amex that gives me none of the benefits but all of the drawbacks of a private amex
