6 month workout review and couple of questions

Cardio uses calories, so if your goal is to add mass you're making extra work for yourself. If you're after weight loss, weights are also effective at burning calories, with the added benefit of doing more lifting.

So if you want to get good at cardio, do cardio.

Don't do cardio before weights, use the energy to put more into your weight training.
Would you recommend a few minutes of HIIT at the end of a workout for fat loss?. (sorry for minor highjack)

He wins I know he does, would be more suitable if you wanted up compare to compare our bodies both at 19.
How do you not even see what you're saying here?

Why are you, at 19, presuming to know more than the people on here?

Also, if you really think you're ahead of the physique curve for a 19 y/o, feel free to prove it.

Will upload a picture when i'm home from London. Not claiming to know more then people at all, just saying there's so much broscience such as don't do cardio before lifting. If that was the case why would Kai Greene bang out two hours before lifting. My original point was one who benches 20-50kg at an old age, nothing to do with presumptions of knowledge.

Not broscience.

Why try to understand or emulate someone like Kai who is worlds apart from those in SA.

Kai Greene was using cardio for a specific purpose and is also joooced up to the back nines.

Biological age has nothing to do with how much you can lift. This guy is around your age and is not on steriods, why can't you lift as much as him?

Come on mate you're smarter than this.

how is 22 an old age? i'd better start low, learn the form and increase the weight when i can than go balls out, injure my self and perform 1/3 of a rep like a lot of EGO guys at the gym do ;) good for you that you can bench 100+ big whoop i can't.. thats why I'm working on it :)

and age has little to do with the number of kg's you can bench i can't even see where you're coming from? what has age got to do with it? i've been properly training for 5 months, 2 months went to waste on a rubbish routine that i thought was good before asking for advice here.

i've never actually seen your pics, PB's or your routine? all i see is a lot of talking and very little to show..

and you really SEEM to have a massive ego going on, sort that out.

Not broscience, it's common sense. Unless you have very specific reasons, using some of your energy via 30 minutes cardio before heavy lifting is retarded.

Totally wrong there's no correct time to do cardio and if you can't bang out 30 mins cardio and still lift to your max you don't deserve to be in the gym.
Dat der is what you call broscience!

I have been following my regime (largely based on Gordy's guide) for six months and I am generally pleased with progress - losing my slight IT belly and adding the better kind of mass, seeing definition*start to appear in places I never had, like my back.

6 months on and I wanted to post my regime up for review or suggestions.

I get to the gym 2-3 times a week.

One: Push
~ 2km on the treadmill
Flat bench press on one of those smith machines - started 3x8 20kg now 3x8 30kg
Incline dumbbell bench - started 3x8 8kg now 3x8 12.5kg per dumbbell
Seated dumbbell military press - started 3x8 8kg now 3x8 10kg per dumbbell
Over head tricep dumbbell extension things - started 3x8 5kg now 3x8 9kg per dumbbell
Lateral dumbbell raises - started 3x8 4kg now 3x8 6kg per dumbbell

Two: Pull
~ 2km on the treadmill
Deadlifts - started 3x8 20kg now 3x8 30kg
Bent over one arm dumbbell rows - started 3x8 10kg, now 3x8 20kg
Assisted chin ups - started with 54kg assist, still on 54kg assist (I weight 73kg)
Barbell bicep curl - started 3x8 15kg, now 3x8 17.5kg (about to move to 20kg)
One arm Dumbbell hammer Curls – started 3x8 8kg, now 3x8 10kg per dumbbell

Three: Legs and core
~ 1km on the treadmill
Barbell squats – started 3x8 20kg, now 3x8 30kg
Dumbbell lunges – 3x8 8kg, now 3x8 10kg (per dumbbell)
Calf raises - (bit confused on these, but now 20kg on angled)
Core workouts

Diet: About 100g of supplemented protein on workout days and about 75kg on non workout days. I take creatine regularly.

Questions:
- I'm not really making progress on my chin ups. It is literally as hard as it was when I started. I weigh 74kg and my assist is 54kg or on a really good day, 48kg. I don't know why, I am progressing everywhere else.

- What is a good calf workout? Everything else is growing except my calfs and I'm starting to look out of proportion. I used to use the seated leg press machine (where you push yourself up the slope) on 60kg or so. I also tried 2x10kg dumbbells and using a step, but again I wouldn't feel much. However, last time I tried the angled leg press in 20kg, and *really* felt it in my calfs. Was I doing it wrong to begin with and is the angled leg press the best way to do a calf raise?

- Am I missing anything in my routine?

- Is my 6 month progress reasonable?

Cheers

Forget your current routine and do Stronglifts 5 x 5 for the next 6 months

Do cardio on your "rest" days and aim for 5-10km not 1-2km.

Take the weekends off completely.

so week 1 would be

Mon - Workout 1
Tues - 5-10k
Wed - Workout 2
Thurs - 5-10K
Friday - Workout 1
Sat and Sun - Nothing

also read up as much as you can about nutrition, diet will be key to success.

Top uni, can't spell 'you're''..I lold.

On an Iphone that didn't automatically correct it. I actually laughed my **** of looking at your stats. Like literally 40kg bench, you amused me for a good 30minutes.

Bench 40kg (5x5)
Deadlift 80kg (1x5)
Squat 65kg (5x5)
OHP 25kg (5x5)
T-Bar row 40kg (5x5)

What I don't get is Elliot, you are battering on about how great your body was when you were 19. Your profile states that you are now 33 (born in 1980) which is a year younger than I, so am I right in thinking you have been lifting for well over 10 years?? If I am correct, you are laughing at people who have been lifting less than 6 months without taking any consideration for their fitness or strength before they started. That's like Nigel Mansell laughing at a guy who has just passed his driving test.

You have no credibility dude, you're just coming across as an arrogant wallaby tbh.

It is hard to believe how incredibly stupid you are. Stupid as a stone that the other stones make fun of. So stupid that you have traveled far beyond stupid as we know it and into a new dimension of stupid. Meta-stupid. Stupid cubed. Trans-stupid stupid. Stupid collapsed to a singularity where even the stupons have collapsed into stuponium. Stupid so dense that no intelligence can escape. Singularity stupid. Blazing hot summer day on Mercury stupid. You emit more stupid in one minute than our entire galaxy emits in a year. Quasar stupid. It cannot be possible that anything in our universe an really be this stupid.
This is a primordial fragment from the original big stupid bang. A pure extract of stupid with absolute stupid purity. Stupid beyond the laws of nature. I must apologize. I can't go on. This is my epiphany of stupid. After this experience, you may not hear from me for a while.
I don't think that I can summon the strength left to mock your moronic opinions and malformed comments about boring trivia or your other drivel. Duh.

I said I will get stats and pics when I'm home from London. He may be juicing - doesn't neglect from my point it's all broscience. Cardio can be done whenever. Kai Greene, Phil Heath all do Cardio before a workout, are they wrong? There's mentality behind it as if you wish to keep your cardio fitness at a good level - if you work hard enough when lifting often you find excuses to avoid the cardio post workout. It can be done whenever not 'strictly after'

And it's hardly bashing it's responding to his ill comment

Dirtybeatfreak we have already established months ago the age on my profile is incorrect.
