Hi folks,

I've been overclocking my FX8150 on an old air cooler for months. Yesterday, lots of toys arrived courtesy of Overclockers UK, what I have purchased to water cool the system is the following:

XSPC AX480mm rad.
XSPC Laing D5 pump and dual bay res.
XSPC Raystorm AMD block.
4 x Corsair AF120 fans.
Also purchased a Corsair Obsidian 900D.

By the way, the 900D is MASSIVE!!!

My 480mm rad is in the top of the case with the 4 fans pulling air in from the outside world. They're on low volts setting for quietness but Corsair say they're the best low speed fans in unrestricted space.

CPU is an AMD FX8150, board is an ASUS Crosshair 5.

Have 2 sticks of Corsair Dominator 8gb, total of 16gb.

Power is provided by a 1200W Akasa PSU.

So, onto the situation. I'm at 4.9Ghz currently and would love to get to 5Ghz just to say I have more then anything. 4.9Ghz is plenty quick enough I know but if 5Ghz can be done, then it should be!

Current BIOS settings are:
Multiplier: 22.0.
FSB: 220
V-Core: 1.5v
NB: 1.3v
DRAM: 1.6v
DRAM speed: 1466mhz.
CPU - NB speed: Auto
RAM timings are stock.

More VCORE, FSB or multiplier causes either, failure to boot or BSOD as soon as stress test begins.

Max temps at current setting is 47 celsius and the system is stable.

CineBench 11.5 score is 7.69.

What I'm hoping for is someone who has got to 5Ghz stable. I'm happy with 4.9Ghz of course but 5.0Ghz would be nice.

On a side note, I have an evga GTX780 arriving tomorrow for this system to replace my two 9800GX2 cards from last century, is the 780 powerful enough to require only one or two a good shout and noticeably better at performing?

I game and am a web developer so lots of intensive work for the system. Also running two monitors. Just got an Asus MX239 yesterday as well and it's fantastic, well worth the money.

Hoping for some awesome replies and a good discussion.

Thanks.

I did get an 8350 to 5GHz stable in most things except prime and IBT, 4.8GHz prime and IBT stable with an ASUS M5A99X. I was on about 1.49V at 5GHz, but prime overheated it at that. This is on aircooling. I am running summer clocks of about 4.65GHz at the moment on a crosshair 5.

I did have LLC turned up to ultra high and high on the NB. This gave stable voltages. I will look out my settings tonight for when I was testing and benching it.

That would be great thanks. On aircooling, the CPU was stable at 4.8Ghz but failed tests due to overheating. Now I've got room with temps, I'm hoping to get another couple of hundred mhzs out of it. If 4.9Ghz is my max, guess I'll just have to be happy and get a 9350 when funds allow.

8350 has slightly higher base clock if I recall???

7.69 @ 4.9ghz? thats the same as my first gen i7 at 4.4.

sorry im not good with amd overclocking hope someone can come help you out.

I'm of the opinion that the CPU has more to give and it's my board settings that are holding it back at current speed and causing crashes at higher speeds. Need some settings for the board, hopefully they will materialize.

Ah, I was assuming a much cheaper board.

If you want 5GHz have you thought about selling off the 8150 and getting an 8350? I expect a 8350 at 4.5GHz would match yours at 5GHz as well.

Well, while writing a reply, I got a BSOD with a code relating to bad clock or something, can't remember exactly...it was the one where 2+2=5.

I think, through the course of clocking this chip and running it on air cooling at 4.8Ghz at reasonably high temps, idle of mid-40s, max of low-60s, I have ultimately reduced the life of it. Plus, today I was putting 1.55v through it.

I'm super impressed with the XSPC loop, max temp of 47 under stress test and it stays there, I think a 9590 is in order. That thing starts at 5Ghz so 6Ghz should be the target. :D

I have another Crosshair 5 that I've replaced due to a faulty PCI-e 1 slot, so I think I'll put the 8150 in that, again, and have that as my secondary computer. I need a system to work on and a system to store things and do accounts etc, less powerful, smaller and silent.

That is, unless someone has some decent HT, NB settings and voltages etc. Multiplier of 25 on the CPU doesn't work at all and that's how I've seen a few people get to 5Ghz.

If your going to buy a new FX save some money go for the 9370 4.7ghz nothing to be sniffed at.

Maybe the 9590 isn't the smartest approach. Perhaps just an 8350 would do. Who knows. Got to wait for some new screws for the CPU block anyway as the threads on the ones I have are FUBAR and keep popping out. That's what you get for buying second hand a saving a few quid. Ends up costing more and you can't use stuff for days on end. Thermal paste had dry patches so definitely didn't put enough on.

5GHz settings (currently running)

Needs more voltage and hence better cooling to maintain prime stability. I'd drop it down a whole multi for 24/7 use without falling over at this time of year. This may give some clues to your settings.

Just seen this. Thanks for the settings. I'll be saving them till I can overclock on another board and OS install as I managed to corrupt my OS the last time I did some serious overclocking a couple of weeks ago. As I use my computer to make money, not to keen on running the risk again. I did however get to 5.1GHz but not stable so hopefully with these settings, I may be able to get to somewhere near that stable. I know this chip is a good one. It was sitting happily at 4.75GHz on just 1.475v.

4.75GHz at 1.45V is where I am at now. 5GHz will run but with too much heat for my current cooling to be prime stable. I do not think that the Crosshair V formula board runs as well at 5GHz as my previous M5A99X for some reason, whether it is the bios or what, I am not sure. Upgrading for the sake of it is not always good. I do have 16GB of memory though which I did not have before. I have lowered the memory frequency to 1800+MHz from 2000MHz.

I never tried 1.45. Temps were good at 1.475. I've watercooled everything now which is what sparked a renewed attempt on 5GHz. My RAM usually runs around 1300mhz when overclocked as its only 1600mhz ram. 2 8gb sticks of corsair dominator.
