Average Speed Camera Clarification?

It is an urban myth. The software has been upgraded as I believe it was an issue initially (but hasn't been for a long time now), though I believe it may not ever have been true irrespective of that? Meh. People don't know how to behave in average speed zones.

What I don't understand is in SPECS areas, why some people blast past me at 70 instead of the 50mph limit stated by the SPECS zone... What do they know that I don't? Do all those people get tickets? I (if I have cruise) just stick on the speed limit and let people overtake (including trucks). Then overtake them all again when I come out of the zone :p

I just think it's clear that a lot of people do not know how average speed cameras work.

This confuses me too.. there is (or) was a stretch on the M62 where they are building all the managed motorway stuff and its 50mph but theres a long stretch with no cameras and then they are back, speed limit im sure remains 50.

It looks like its two separated 'sets' of average speed cameras but its not clear if they are all linked.,

Im sure they make it confusing on purpose, you have a mixture of people doing 50 and some doing 70/80..

If there's no NSL signage between the cameras then it's a continuous stretch. I don't see how that's confusing...

No they don't, they monitor the whole carriageway, your information is years out of date.

This.

It was a myth from ages ago, I'm not sure it even applied in the first place.

A lot of setups will monitor 3 lanes with 2 cameras anyway.

Exactly. The 50 limit applies until you pass an NSL sign. I've seen setups before where theres been a couple of miles between average speed cameras.

could always try to tuck in behind a van or lorry so your car doesn't get tagged by the cameras? :p

dislike the average ones... usually have some stupid sign saying 40mph or something so majority slow down to it... and we're all idling along.... but then there's always a few who just don;t seem to give a **** and overtake everyone doing about 80/90 through every set....as much as I'd like to follow I usually resist the temptation as would rather not get a fine xD

I prefer SPECS in construction zones than just mobile speed cameras. Average speed is a much more sensible way of controlling the traffic in construction zones IMO.

I've always wondered that too.
How do people blast through average speed camera zones and not get a fine?
They can't be dawdling along at 10mph for ages then blitz the last bit just for the fun of it.

Average speed camera's either don't work, I'm missing something, the speeding drivers don't know how to drive properly in an ave.
speed zone or simply don't give a hoot and take the points and fine.

Indeed, I've always wondered this. I go through them at satnav verified 50mph but the amount of people that still seem to blitz past me is crazy. It particularly seems to be lorries that are blatantly breaking the speed limit. I realise their speedos are more accurate than most car speedos but when I'm doing satnav verified 50mph and they're clearly going faster than me then they are clearly speeding.

Either there really are a lot of idiots who don't care about getting points or average speed cameras have a much higher tolerance than normal cameras. Whichever way it is, I'm not taking any chances to save a few minutes off my journey.

On, for example, a 10 mile stretch of average speed cameras it will take 12 minutes at 50mph as opposed to 8 and a half minutes at 70mph. I'm not risking a ticket to save 3 and a half minutes which would probably only get lost again on a bit of traffic further along anyway.

I go on the M62 quite a bit for work and to watch football at weekends and always wondered how people were getting away with doing considerably more than 50mph in the 50mph specs zones.

On the upside.. at least the specs zone is much shorter now.

On the M62 they are scaling back their average speed cameras, West bound they are there from 28-31. From 31 onwards it is the variable speed limit, which is 60 for one gantry then national speed limit their after.

Yep, a prime example being the A14 around Cambridge. Never been caught there myself, but quite a few friends have. I've never logged the distance between each set of cameras, but it has to be a few miles between each. This particular average speed setup goes on for miles and miles as well.

On the face of it, you're right; average speed cameras are an ideal way to manage traffic speed.

But passing through road-works, where lanes are narrower, the road has been realigned, the surface is unstable and there are men at work within metres of live traffic, is where you want people giving the road their full concentration, not their speedo for fear of going over the defined limit.

Having witnessed a few near misses in such roadworks due to people looking down at their dashboard rather than the road (and I'm guilty of it myself - passing through a SPECS controlled zone I'm always a bit paranoid about my speed creeping up), I often wonder if it might be safer to relax speed limits through some stretches.

I just set the cruise to the relevant speed and never look at it again :p. On the A14 around Cambridge i set the cruise to 70mph (on par with satnav) which is about 72/73mph on the speedo.

Seem to overtake most people doing it as well.

The vast majority aren't really blasting through - they're just doing what I do and setting the cruise to 10MPH over the limit. For instance, I know that 60MPH on my speedo is 56MPH actual which is below the level enforcement starts in a 50 zone, and as a result I won't get a ticket. If you're setting your cruise to 50MPH, that's probably a genuine speed of around 47MPH, so I'm driving around 10MPH faster than you, which allows me to overtake you at a decent rate.

Of course, you do get some who go through at 70+, and I'm pretty confident they'll be getting FPNs dropping through the letterbox. Those people seem pretty rare though - from what I've seen on my m25 commute, most people stick to 50 on their speedo, 10% of people do what I do, and maybe 1% of people go through properly quick.

Actually westbound the average cameras are from 31-27, then from just after 26-24, east bound its 25-just after 26, then just after 28 to just after 30.

Speed wise, my speedo is pretty much bang on in the minibuses, i do 54 all the time without a problem :).

Yes you will. :p

I never speed in residential areas and I only go over 70 on the motorway when I'm having to overtake in a short time (such as having to get to a specific lane).
These average speed cameras have just thrown me, I'm going to be super careful in future.

It's been 13 days since the incident and I've not had anything in the post yet *touch wood*, I'll leave it until Monday before giving a sigh of relief though.

Can anyone go on these speed awareness courses or is it just those that are sent to them by the police? I wouldn't mind going on it just so I'm clear about all the different speed limits from different signs on the motorway.

Thing is, you don't know if they are getting away with it or not. For all you know every single one of them has received a speeding ticket.

Better safe than sorry with average speed cameras :)
