Am I the only one wondering why these girl smugglers are National News?

Without doubt they've mixed with the wrong people in Ibiza and been promised a lot of cash for trying to smuggle drugs back to the island. Young and naive to think you can get away with this nowadays.

Do you honestly think this is the only attempt to get drugs across borders like this? Stuff like this happens all the time. This was likely one of many attempts on that one day alone.

Also "without doubt" they've been offered cash and are lying? Really? No room for any doubt at all?

Do people not realise this happens daily?

They estimate around 10% of drugs smuggled through passenger airports are intercepted. Most of the time when people are caught it's down to a tip off.

On the contrary that is how its done, the amount of drugs seized is peanuts to the big guys, theyll happily sacrifice a couple of cretins which draws attention & resources, allowing them to slip shipments thru whilst the authorities are busy back slapping & playing to the camera.

What use is there in catching the mule though? They didn't produce nor distribute nor entirely profit from the drug sales. More likely someone didn't get the pay off they wanted in Peru amd didn't turn a blind eye at the right time and these girls are going to take the fall.

I would have thought it was plainly obvious why.

By arresting mules and charging them with harsh sentences sends out the message that it simply isn't tolerated and is important because by doing whatever they can do deter it, will ultimately slow down the drugs trade somewhat.

Not all drug mules are like the case of these girls or Lindsay Sandiford where there is a yet to be tested claim that they were coerced or forced into doing it. There are many drug mules who are quite complicate in what they are doing and may go to greater lengths to disguise what is being carried, which is likely how they get away with it.

I have already seen some press comments about how this might have been a deliberately easy to find smuggle, in order to draw away attention from perhaps a far greater shipment, possibly on the same plane.

Most major drug hauls aren't done through public flights lol.

Yes I don't have any room for doubt, you don't fly from Ibiza to Peru and back just for a little sight seeing adventure.
 
Yea but the mules are the easy target and don't stop the problem. If the authorities had the balls and firepower they'd go straight for the gangs growing and dealing but they do not. Why shooty shooty when you can arrest a couple of 19 year old girls?

Oh, so I suppose these girls didn't take a chartered flight and had to hire a private plane to take them, because nobody ever flies Ibiza to/from Peru, thus no airline maintains a route between them?

What I've been told is the drug people tip off the police about a drugs haul, they catch the
them with the drugs and then it's "look at how good we are". But the big amount of drugs has come in another way.
And I bet(I have no evidence) that some of the guards at the airport ect are paid off.

$1.5 mil in drugs is nothing these days. I remember the two speedboats trying to get drugs in to Florida.
One was sunk the other had over $500 million worth of drugs on board now that's a big drugs bust.

TL;DR: These girls are possibly a distraction with a relatively small amount of narcotics. There could well be a big(ger) shipment elsewhere.
