My friend asked me to spec him up a pc which is fine but he needs it to be used for solidworks and 3Ds max for modeling and rendering, I really dont have much of a clue on what should be recommended.

He has a budget of 800 (can go up if justified)

Pretty sure he needs a monitor but will have to confirm.

He also has a Quadro 1700 GPU which I also have no idea about so not sure if its worth just keeping that or buying a later version.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi,

Modelling/CAD PC's are pretty easy to get your head around once you know..Basically they use a lot of cores (for modelling/simulation) and a lot of RAM (for rendering) aswell as benifiting from good graphics (lots of processing cores).

What id do is look at the intel i7's.. either the 1150 socket 4770k or the 2011 socket 3820.. I'd personally go down the 2011 3820 route due to being able to upgrade to a hex core at a later date (futureproof).

RAM wise i'd reccomend atleast 16GB of RAM though 32GB would be preferable. (faster RAM also helps).

For the GPU the Quadro 1700 will be good enough for now but if you have any of the budget left an upgrade would be good..THe best place to get quadro's are from online acution sites, as they go very cheap there, look at getting a FX4800 or Quadro 2000.. :)

CPU: 3820: £260: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-391-IN
Motherboard: £210: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-414-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=2174
RAM: £120: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-008-TG&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=817

That's where i would start :)

Sorry for double post.

Ok iv got this so far, he doesnt need keyboard, mouse and monitor. So, so far iv got this:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-3820 3.60GHz (Sandybridge-E) Socket LGA2011 Processor - Retail £259.99
1 x Gigabyte X79-UP4 Intel X79 (Socket 2011) DDR3 Motherboard £209.99
1 x TeamGroup Xtreem LV 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 PC3-17000C9 2133MHz Dual/Quad Channel Kit (TXD316G2133HC9NQC-L) £119.99
1 x Phanteks PH-TC14PE CPU Cooler - Black £69.98
1 x Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (ST1000DM003) HDD £49.99
1 x Samsung SH-224DB/RSMS 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black/Silver/Biege) - Retail £22.99
Total : £744.34 (includes shipping : £9.50).

Maybe with this case? BitFenix Shinobi Midi Tower Chassis from another source.

But what kind of PSU should he go for, as the rig looks very power hungry.
Also I imagen and SSD would have a huge impact on rendering is this true? Is it worth it?

Good start though there is a few issues here.

The RAM is high profile and will clash with big air coolers (like the TC14PE), RAM like this (below) would fit under the cooler :):

You have also got an issue with the case and the cooler clearence, as it is at the moment, the case side panel wouldn't fit on.

I suggest getting this case instead: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-245-CM&groupid=2362&catid=29

No point spending £70 on an after market cooler if he's not going to be overclocking.

I'd stick with the stock cooler or maybe a quieter £25 one.

Where did he say that?

To be honest, i'd overclock the nuts off it. :)

Power isn't really an issue as the CAD GPU's are very power friendly..

This would be my build:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-3820 3.60GHz (Sandybridge-E) Socket LGA2011 Processor - Retail £259.99
1 x Gigabyte X79-UP4 Intel X79 (Socket 2011) DDR3 Motherboard £209.99
1 x Patriot Viper "Black Mamba" Generation 3 16Gb (4x4GB) DDR3 PC3-15000C9 1866MHz Quad Channel kit (PV316G186C9QK) £119.99
1 x Corsair Vengeance C70 Midi Tower Gaming Case - GunMetal Black £94.99
1 x XFX Pro 650W Core Edition '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply £64.99
1 x Alpenföhn K2 Mount Doom CPU Cooler £59.99
1 x Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (ST1000DM003) HDD £49.99
1 x LG GH24NSB0 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £16.99
Total : £891.92 (includes shipping : £12.50).

Thanks for the replys on the PSU and that case looks great, my friend will be using it for work only pretty much so probably won't be over clocking it but I ramp it up a little (might as well :p) the build doomed posted looks great but maybe a couple of quid over I'll have to run it by him.

What about SSD's would they have a big impact on these tasks or would the hard drive be fine?

Sorry if I've missed anything typing on phone from work
