When should i take protein shakes?

Haha I don't actually go near the stuff. I'm a firm believer that you should avoid putting anything that doesn't grow, run, swim or fly etc into your mouth.

Funnily enough creatine supplements can yield abnormal liver function tests through elevated enzymes in otherwise healthy individuals. It is purely of academic concern and not dangerous although slightly alarming none the less!

Though creatine is present in meats and fish - and is one of the most widely researched supplements out there... abuse is abuse though some people will over do it.

Oh flippin eck!.. what the hell have i started! ;). I only asked when was a good time to have a shake or two??? Now i am apparently injecting myself on a regular basis!! ..
I gather from what i have read of the semi-sensible answers that if my diet is right then i will get all the protein i need from food and shakes are not needed nor warranted in my situation. Thats fine, have no issue with that whatsoever!
Am i right in saying though, that IF i could not make a meal (i do work some silly shift hours) and that say not enough time for breakfast - then a shake would be ok in THAT situation IF i was planning on a workout later that day - then followed by a meal after the workout????? - Is that a feasible scenario or still no to the shake.. thats my final question.. :D

no the shake will poison you and ruin your intestines

On a serious note, there's no need to over-think it. Yes that's fine.

Of course it is. The timing is largely irrelevant if you're using protein powder to supplement meals. It's the post workout meal which is arguably the most important meal and IMO that would be the best time to avoid shakes, contrary to what is largely and incorrectly accepted. This is the time to put in the effort to prepare and cook decent, healthy grub if you otherwise lead a very active and busy lifestyle.

If you were going to use a shake as a meal substitute, particularly for breakfast, I would highly recommend mixing it with milk/oats for the sake of satiety. Also you're then consuming a bit of nutrition and not just artificially created powder.

Elliot is right, don't over think it. Just think of a protein shake as a meal, albeit one which is low in nutrition and best avoided unless you have time/cost constraints. :)

You will not maximise gains or any crap like that by consuming it at any particular time.

This.

A whole host of other benefits have been attributed to creatine supplementation. Plenty of studies to read.

Protein shakes are a complete waste of money.

Fix your diet. I have a bag of protein which only ever gets used if I'm not able to meet my protein macros for the day.

Best thing to have post workout, funnily enough, is a large meal which meets whatever macro requirements you're going for. This whole idea that if you don't ingest a protein shake within 10 minutes of your workout your muscles wont grow is a fitness industry marketing lie. It's absurd.

They aren't a waste of money. It is impossible for me to fix my diet at the minute. I even have my missus sending me parcels of mackerel out to try and fill my requirements. Protein shakes are an easy fix for me until I get back to the UK.

It's swole factor is a proven 10.
anyone with a carnivorous diet likely gets enough creatine anyway

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/14600563
RESULTS:

Biopsy samples indicated that total creatine (TCr=free Cr + PCr) was significantly lower in VG compared with NV at baseline (VG=117 mmol.kg(-1); NV=130 mmol.kg(-1); P<0.05). For Cr subjects, there was a greater increase in PCr, TCr, bench-press strength, isokinetic work, Type II fiber area, and whole-body lean tissue compared with subjects on placebo (P<0.05). Vegetarians who took Cr had a greater increase in TCr, PCr, lean tissue, and total work performance than nonvegetarians who took Cr (P<0.05). The change in muscle TCr was significantly correlated with initial muscle TCr, and the change in lean tissue mass and exercise performance. These findings confirm an ergogeniceffect of Cr during resistance training and suggest that subjects with initially low levels of intramuscular Cr (vegetarians) are more responsive to supplementation

anyone with a high meat diet likely has no need for extra creatine but don't knock everyone for taking it as again with protein some people need to SUPPLEMENT!

there is also tests that show it to improve vegetarians memory too ;)

Maybe we need a vegetarians guide to supplements

There is plenty of evidence to show that supplementing to supra-physiological levels has benefits.

You only don't need shakes if you get enough protein in your diet.

They are absolutely not a waste of money, and are in fact the cheapest form of quality protein (provided that you buy sensibly), it's just that most people don't know quite how much meat/eggs/fish/etc. they should be eating to hit the required levels of protein.

Chances are, you are going to have to add a lot of protein to your diet is some shape or form. Work out how much you're eating currently and see if it's feasible to eat more food to make up your macro nutrient numbers. If not, use protein shakes.

They're a waste of money to the thousands of people with crap diets/useless training regimes/no progress/no commitment who buy them because MyProtein tell them to. Building a good body whether that's being extremely lean or massive takes hard work not a spending spree.

In your case then obviously you're using it, as discussed above, to supplement your diet and meet your macros which in this context it is not a waste of money.

I should have differentiated in my original comment as opposed to just making the blanket statement that all protein shakes are a waste of cash.
