How safe is Egypt at the minute?

Presumably its probably a cheaper holiday right now as I would imagine hotel bookings are down. Still, going by the headlines I'd avoid the place.

Yeah I'd personally avoid it too. I just have this image of a horde of Islamic extremists storming the barrier that separates Sharm el-Sheik from the rest of Egypt. The smugness of the tourists at getting a cheap holiday would rapidly change to horror.

Do you think most European Countries would give the go a head to use snipers with live ammunition firing on targets that are mingling with innocent protesters? :|

Not a European example, but Waco in the US proved that once people start to pushthe right buttons the government response can be 'forceful'.

Say there was a muslim uprising in London where 1000's of protestors in london were rampaging and there were armed combatants and suicide bombers in the mix, you think the Gov wouldn't deploy an armed response? bahahaha.. aahahah

Been twice, a few years ago now. First time we stayed in Sharm el Sheikh, the Hotel Siani if I remember correctly. Was a very nice holiday. Second time stayed in a Mariott hotel. My dad got very ill and my granddad nearly died of food poisoning. That, combined with all the bad publicity from the news, would put me off going back their.

Looking into going to Hurghada for New Year, anyone been recently? Hoping to fit a trip to Luxor in but people keep trying to put me off, suggesting I'm unlikely to come back alive :)

Hurghada is nothing special. Two decent hotels and a 50m stretch of shops that's, well, maybe worth walking pass. And the hotel people says that's the 'nice' part. I shudder to think what the regular parts look like.

Out of all places within the world, there's probably more suitable destinations than Egypt right now.

if you watch the videos they are making their way to the front firing off a couple of bursts then moving back in amongst a mix of peaceful and stone throwing protestors.

Got a link?

The Army are murdering their own people and no-one will stop them.

God I wish we did it in Northern Ireland.
A good summer of protests and the benefits bill would be halved.

Kind of funny how the facts get distorted.

There were snipers trying to take out armed protestors and there were some collateral casualties ["government"/army claims they only used tear gas and no live fire]

Protestors complain the army/police went in with machineguns and freefire with 100s massacred ["government"/army mostly used tear gas with live fire ostensibly against specific targets]

Would you like to redact some of your comments?

Video on news channels clearly show security forces using automatic weapons and the health ministry has admitted 278 deaths so far.

State of emergency has been in place for years . Curfew applies to sharm now but should be lifted in a few days. Hurghada is a little more risky. Follow Fco advice, book through an atol / Abta agent. Would recommend sharm over hurghada at the moment. Also wouldn't bother booking any excursions till you get there as most are not happening.

Egypt: 278 People Killed In Nationwide Clashes
Egypt's Prime Minister defends the police's actions, saying Morsi loyalists were "terrorising citizens and attacking property".
totally safe if you don't mind a power struggle between to power mad crazy people

Redact what? It was a violent protest and a forceful clearing I never said a lot of people didn't die, I was saying the reports of a general massacre via indiscriminate freefire were highly exaggerated as were the armies claims it only used tear gas.

EDIT: Tho having seen some of the more recent videos there was a higher level of supressive fire in some cases than earlier reports made out, the one I was just watching theres a crowd of a hundred odd people with sustained gunfire going overhead in both directions with a couple of people hit by stray rounds.

Egypt isn't good at the moment.

Shame really, as I'm keeping my eye on it as I fancy doing Valley of the Kings.

Went to Luxor this time last year, valley of the kings was interesting but a bit overrated. The tombs are all pretty much empty now with just some faded patches on the walls that you can still see. If you're in the area anyway I'd go there but I wouldn't plan an entire holiday around seeing them.

On saying that Luxor itself is very interesting, the temples of Luxor and Karnak are magnificent. Check out the Maritim Jolie Ville hotel if you go, it's cheap these days for obvious reasons and a stunning location on its own island on the nile. Waking up at sunrise for a cool breakfast by the banks of the nile with the call to prayer echoing up and down the river from the half dozen minarets within hearing is an experience I will never forget.

I don't recommend going in August though, we went at the end of August and were absolutely baked alive. We arrived at the valley of the kings at 8am and had to leave at 12 because it was far too hot. You literally cannot be outside between 10am-3pm unless you're in the shade preferably with a pool nearby! The entire place shuts down at that time.
