Recommend New Wireless Router

I have BT Infinity broadband and am currently using a BT Home Hub 3 wirelessly. The wireless signal isn't very good for online gaming, streaming or downloading.

speedtest.net shows my speed as:

I also only get 2 bars on the wireless icon on the toolbar. It is not possible to have a wired connection due to the location of the PC. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a wireless router that will speed up the connection. I am mainly looking forward to streaming football on BT Sport and Sky Go.

Another vote for the Asus routers here.
I have a DSL-N55 and an RT56U (names are not exact as I am not at home right now)

And they both give excellent wireless signal. :)
What is your broadband speed if you plug an ethernet cable into your laptop by the way ?
 
+1 for Asus, very impressed by their routers once they ironed out all the firmware bugs.

Solid bits of hardware.
 
Aye, you can't go wrong with an RT-N56U. The other models are a little better on wireless range, and you have a few more features, but at quite a premium over the N56U.

I do not have a laptop so I cannot test the speed with it plugged in.
 
Do the Asus routers have good parental controls? I have a mate who wants to be able to control when his kids are allowed access to the internet, i.e. it goes off at 10pm or whatever times he can set. Was going to set him up with a router and ddwrt but it appears from reading up on the ddwrt websites that these routers are risky to flash.

If the router can do all this already I might recommend him one as he wants good wifi range and then just use the Asus default firmware but would like to know how good or bad it is from someone who has used it.

I'd go for any with a 5* (star) rating and are a reasonable consumer price. No point in spending £150 on a router (it may not be as good as you think). All technology encounters such issues as bugs, freezes and lag as well as the odd disconnections and time-outs.
