Ditch the iPad 3 for Nexus Tablet?

Seems like a good device. I was contemplating it before I splashed out on a imported Nexus 7 2013.

The proprietary charging socket on the Nook HD+ makes me rage.. WHY!!! Why do that?!

Couldn't agree more, its not like the micro usb is a problem. You can still use a usb host cable but you need a gender changer, pita. Also just bought the official flip case with sleep function in Sainsbury for £12, £35 when it came out.

That's a tricky one, for web browsing the screen size and ratio is better on the Ipad as it's 10" and more importantly 4:3. Going down to the Nexus 7's 7" with 16:10 will loose you a lot of vertical space which I've never liked doing for web browsing. But the nexus will be way more portable for when you use it in the car :p just depends on your main uses really. How about you keep the ipad for browsing and get a better phone for portable music instead of carrying two devices around.
Or buy an iPad mini which would be my recommendation over the nexus 7.

Try rooting your N4 and install a faux123 kernel - then get his FauxSound app for a couple of groats. Would be the cheapest option, and it should help improve SQ.

I'm surprised no-one's suggested simply keeping the iPad 3. It's still pretty good, and tablets haven't moved on enough to warrant replacing it and suffering more depreciation in my view. The Nexus is good, and if you didn't currently have a tablet, it would be a better discussion, but unless you envisage taking the tab out and about an awful lot, I can't see the point in changing for the sake of it, especially not to a device which due to its form factor is worse than your current device for what you use it for.

Phone change would be on the cards more I'd say, or try using a USB DAC, or perhaps Bluetooth as the sound quality isn't impacted by the onboard DAC.

I have both an iPad 2 and a first gen Nexus 7 and although the nexus is cheaper, the screen is no way near as clear as the iPad 2. Obvious I cant comment on the second gen Nexus, but its convenient that it fits in pocket

I can't tell if you're being serious about the screen comment?

The screen on the ipad 2 was good when it was new, but it's old now, and very outdated in terms of resolution and pixel density.

Ipad 2 - 768 x 1024 pixels, 9.7 inches (~132 ppi pixel density)
Nexus 7 (1st gen) - 800 x 1280 pixels, 7.0 inches (~216 ppi pixel density)

Fairly hefty increase in pixel density for the Nexus there, and we're not even talking about the new 7!

Not sure if I'm missing something here, but I would be hugely surprised to for the ipad 2's screen to be clearer than the Nexus's?

I always thought the first Gen nexus 7s screen was not up to much either tbh... Regardless of pixel density it just was not a high quality display IMO, seemed to be washed out with a muddy quality to it.

Thanks again for the info,

I'm going to give the kernel a try to see if SQ is improved. If not then I'll probably ditch the Nexus 4 if I can get a relatively cheap android with similar specs and better audio quality...

I'll keep the iPad 3 until something with much better specs comes available. Just thought I could sell and buy something new whilst making a bit of cash!.

^ Crazy person above ^

Why?

The mini has more apps/games, better battery life, better screen aspect ratio for web browsing and photos, better build, better styling (admittedly subjective), more stable/integrated OS.

The new nexus has a higher resolution screen (not that the minis DPI is really an issue, and this may change in September if a new one is released) and it's cheaper...

Why crazy?

Coming from someone who had an android tablet and saw the app selection and who has an HTC One and can compare the apps/games for android and OSX directly. Someone who also spent ages deciding whether to get a mini or the original nexus. ;)

The screen on the original nexus 7 is very pixely, compared to the iPad 2. Plus on full brightness the Nexus 7 is way darker than the iPad 2

I think you would be insane to go from 10" to 7" screen size really does matter and makes a huge difference. Unless you're one of those people who can fit a 7" in a pocket and feel fine carrying it around all the time.

Now give me an 11.6" tablet.

Why crazy?
Because almost everything you just listed was subjective or irrelevant.

It is almost (if not completely) agreed that the 2013 nexus 7 is the best 7 inch tablet you can buy and is cheaper comparing like for like.

I find 7" to be a much nicer format than 10". It just feels much more comfortable in the hand.

I use an iPad 3 on a daily basis for webrowsing in bed and such.

I got the case through for the 2013 Nexus 7 that I will pick up on the highstreet upon release and I'm really looking forward to the smaller form. The iPad is such a pain to hold and is too big. The N7 fits perfectly in my hand. Well the case does.
