Sounds good :)

I think encouraging a red and white alternation is good but let's not make it a strict rule. Some people only like one or the other.

The emailing idea of Ahleckz' is good... I thought of something similar too. I don't think anyone would blame you if you didn't want to deal with collating the emails though :)

Edit: my housemate will probably join in with this so I'll post a review from him too if that's all good.

If we use my idea of a ballot then it will ensure we should get a mix of wine and don't need too many rules. Only ones I can think of would be:
No duplicate wines.
Attempt to mix it up a bit, with regards to types of grape/region and so on.
Pick something relatively easy to get!

Definitely agreed on no duplicates. Should do the random person thing too though let the OP choose at first.... I say this partially because I have no inspiration for wine ATM :p

Which is why you should switch :p

If you don't then you could have four people in a row who only like red. Anyone who only likes white loses out quite a bit, as they don't get to take part for quite some time.

I like the idea of attempting to mix it up, but how you mix it up is up to the person taking part :)

I definitely believe we should encourage and perhaps pressure people to mix things up but some aren't as up for trying new things as others and it would be a shame to exclude them :)

Personally I'm happy to have pretty much anything someone chooses as long as I can get hold of it without having to pimp myself out :p

how about every 2 weeks there are several wines nominated to try
- red
- white
- rose
- sparkling
-?port

folk could try what they like and its a way of getting a broader range of wines explored

also remember that not all of us have access to waitrose morrisons threshers aldi if not on mainland britain....

I think it's a good idea in principle, but I'd be massively in favour of the earlier suggestion of everyone picking their own wine within a given brief (2010 Bordeaux, White Languedoc, New World Malbec, etc.). This thread could be an excellent conduit for all of us to discover wines that we'd never normally think of drinking based on the reviews of other posters, so 50 of us all drinking the same wine week in week out could be somewhat limiting - particularly those weeks where the chosen wine disappoints for most participants!

On two further points, this system would allow those not based in the UK to participate whilst also allowing us to cover a breadth of wine, as in my opinion the average supermarket stock is distinctly average.

Hey guys, I've been out and chosen our first bottle.

I'll update the op with the template etc and I'll post below the first wine to try.

Chateauneuf-du-Pape Grande Reserve 2012

Origin: French
Region: Chateauneuf-du-Pape
Grape: Grenache (70%), Syrah (20%), Mourvedre and Cinsault (10%)
Alcohol: 14.5%

Bought from: ASDA
Price: £14.50 £10

Description: Grand Reserve is made from a blend of Grenache (70%), Syrah (20%), Mourvedre and Cinsault (10%) grapes to produce a rich, full - bodied wine with ripe, spicy fruit, soft tannins and a long, powerful finish.

It goes well with grilled and roast meats, pasta with tomato, garlic and herb sauces and vegetarian dishes such as wild mush risotto.

While this wine is ready to drink now, with careful storage it will keep for at least two years.

I meant to do that, honest! And come in here and thank you and all!!

I'm getting married on saturday and I've just been told the severe pain I have is my wisdom teeth need to come out, so I'm feeling SWEEET right now!! ha

Sorry! :( I will reply, but count me out the first one as this wedding business is driving me nuts.

i'd be in, but my sense of smell is crap and taste a lot of the time.

but i love my big red's from the sunday times wine club. savignon's from new zealand are grand too.

one of my favourite cheap wines, although not that cheap anymore or as strong, is Tesco Australian red wine. deep colour and full of body. it used to be £2.29 a bottle but now costs £3.68 with a new posh label.

Smeg. I'm getting an Asda delivery tonight and can't add the bottle. Will have to try and eat everything quickly and place another order soon. Nearest store is a pain to get to.

So I detoured to two Asda's on Friday night while heading to Norfolk to try and get this bottle. Neither had it.

I did end up buying the only bottle of C9dP in the Swaffham store which the chap there proudly told me had been sitting on a shelf since Christmas. I paid £6 for it and decided to review this instead to get the thread moving.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cellier des Princes 2009

Tasting Notes: It's alright.
Food Pairing: Steak with mustard sauce and new potatoes.
Appearance: 3/5 - Bricky red - definitely more advanced than it should be.
Aroma: 4/5 - nice smells, bit farmyardy but to be expected from the appearance and grapes involved.
Taste: 3/5 - Jammy fruit compote, good amount of body to it.
Finish: 3/5 - Average. Not too much length, does what it should.
VERDICT: 13/20 - would pay £6 for this again. Seems to be £15 when priced properly and so would pass on that.
