Er, it's not exactly difficult with an unlockable bootloader?Make it easier to root too!
What makes you associate 'plastic' with 'crap'?

I picked up an HTC One. It felt nice and metally and well crafted.
I purchased HTC One. The end.
What makes you associate 'plastic' with 'crap'? I suggest you go on a two day plastics course as I did, and learn about the vast range of plastics and their applications. The polymer selection process and engineering that goes into the single back cover of a smartphone is nothing to scoff at.
If anything, you have fallen for the marketing because I'm pretty confident that, overall, the plastic that Samsung use in the S4 will have more favourable properties than the aluminium used in the HTC One or the iPhone 5. For starters, it'll be far more sustainable. Granted, it doesn't have the premium look and feel of the HTC One, but I'm in no doubt it's a better engineered material. You say Samsung are ahead because of their marketing? Maybe. But I'm pretty sure the materials science and efficient manufacturing processes are a major contributing factor to their record profits and market share. HTC chose are more expensive (and less suited) material for their flagship smartphone. I'm glad they did, because it's different and looks great, but they made that decision knowing it would be less profitable.
The HTC One could show off:
BoomSound
UltraPixel camera in darkness
HTC Zoe features like always smile
The IR remote control it has in built linked to favourite TV shows that you click on and itll put that channel on
Etc etc
