Hey guys & gals,

A while ago I posted a query regarding moving to and living in Zurich. Turns out something has cropped up in Edinburgh, and I have decided to go for it.

Having never been to Edinburgh I am limited in my knowledge of layout / transport / cost of living (utilities, food, etc), but what I do know is that everyone who ever speaks about it does so very positively.

My job will move out there probably by early October, so if anyone could post any helpful information, like if there are any areas to avoid living in or conversely good areas to look at.

I guess I would be looking at renting initially with the possibility of buying in the not too distant future (1 - 2 years).

I should also point out I live in London currently, so cost of living and prices comparative to that!

I don't drive, at least again, not initially, so transport (be it within walking distance or easily accessed buses.) is important for locations as well.

Any information at all will be helpful, thanks.

Edinburgh has a great bus network so you won't have a problem getting about without a car, regardless of where you end up living.

For places to stay try Canonmill, Stockbridge and Comely bank. Trinity is lovely. Likewise Barnton and Cramond. Joppa and parts of Portobello appeal. Craigentinny has nice housing, but is close to Seafield Sewage treatment works. Blackhall is nice. So is Fairmilehead, Currie, Balerno, Juniper Green. Rental prices vary greatly, £600+pcm should get you a 1 bed flat in many a location. Houses are obviously a lot more and if you wanted to flatshare you'll be able to find a double room for £300-400 pcm.

Leith is quite popular as you can get a good deal and parts of it are pretty funky but you have to be aware despite regeneration parts of it are an absolute dive.

Generally speaking cost of living will be lower than London for food etc. Council tax will depend where you end up living but expect to pay £150+ per month but that includes your water/wastewater charges. Electric/Gas costs again will depend on what sort of accommodation you end up in.

Yes of course, where I will be working is smack in the centre, right next to the castle.

If price isn't much of an issue my go to areas would be stockbridge, comely bank and the West End area. These would be walkable to work too. Saying that there's nice areas where you'd pay less but they'd be further out from the city centre. Any questions drop me a PM, I'm living in Edinburgh currently :)
