Is the 4770k worth it?

Just remember seeing the pic, it looked like it brought the area surrounding the cpu socket level with the naked mounted cpu. Therefore the possibility of overtightening and crushing the die was eliminated. Iirc, was naked mounting a pretty common practice on older athlon cpu's, skt A? I only got into pc's at the time skt 939 was popular.

Mobo wont be here until monday mate, as im pretty busy at work, (overtime on my own bat) i might not get it built till next weekend. Either that or i take one of my remaining holidays next week.:D

ok I found the pic, still need to ask where to get it from

Cheers wazza, thats the exact shot i remember seeing. It looks ideal even for an air cooled haswell/ib cpu. Because tbh, even high end watercooling on a standard chip cannot cope with the heat theese chips produce. Mind if i ask, what was your max temp with the silver arrow, and clockspeed prior to delidding?

83c max under ibt on this current chip, 1.3400 vcore. Alpenfohn k2 cooler, akasa piranhas maxed at 1900 rpm. Quite loud, it's game stable on that voltage, but fire up any benchmark that utilises the cpu, (3dm11 being one). It will whea error on the cpu tests and drop the score right down, ive actually done better with it on an ai suite auto oc at 4.2ghz. 15000 points ono, 4.5ghz just over 14900 points. Same gpu clocks, same drivers, same settings on each run. I know benchmarks dont mean squat in real daily use, but it is a little bit annoying.

I've seen one user get rid of whea errors by disabling c3/c6 power saving Idk if it works havnt had chance to try it yet

Soon as he enabled it again whea errors came back

Im nearly sure i have all power states disabled mate. But ill definitely check next time im in the bios.

Btw wazza, seen in another thread, (motorsports) your a biker. Ever watch any road racing, very big over here. Great day in my home town a few weeks ago.

North west 200, ulster grand prix is tomorrow, (weather permitting). The race in my home town is only going as 5 years, short road course but extremely fast. Mate of mine has done a few over here now. Lap of my local circuit here.

Just out of curiosity, I`m using AS5, would using Coolaboratory Liquid Pro give me much in the way of lower temps?
Yep, it probably would mate. At a rough estimate based on my personal use of cl paste. Youd be looking at a 3-6c drop in temps, off course other factors such as how you apply it, your cooler etc will have an effect. But tbh, it's brilliant stuff. When i ordered my new mobo i almost forgot to include a tube of cl ultra. Ive got other pastes in my bits drawer, but i doubt ill ever use them.

Yes, by using offset or adaptive voltage. The name differs according to which motherboard you own. Ive never used it myself so im sorry i cant advise you on it.

I might look at getting some. I know one is thicker than the other but both give the same results, so which is thicker, Pro or Ultra?
Normally when applying paste I use an old debit card, as I seem to get an even coat, but for some reason I did a pea size dollop and let the cooler spread it. So I might just redo the paste the way I usually do and see if it makes any difference. Then have a go with the CL Pro/Ultra.
