Opinions on new MacBook Air

just made use of my Apple Edu Discount

Hey, I'm looking at getting the new MBA. I'm not a student anymore but seem to be able to get to the checkout on the edu store without putting in any NUS number or anything.

Why doesn't everyone do this or will I be asked for some sort of proof of being a student further down the line?

I've only ever done one previous order using the edu store, and that was for the 2011 Mac Mini.

I go to the OU, so it is, quite literally impossible for me to be on site to do an order as they don't have a student campus to use. I do have an OU e-mail address, but I use my Hotmail one for ordering.

I presume there is a degree of trust in it, and they just shrug it off if the odd one gets through. I wouldn't want to risk it though as they obviously have all your details, and you tick the whole 'I have used this appropriately' button when submitting the order.

I guess the fact is, if they called me and went 'hi, so you go to the OU but ordered from a PlusNet IP Address' then I'd go 'yes, here is my student Identifier with the OU, here is my proof of continual study, and here is me mailing from my OU mail address'

So... I guess you could risk it, but I'd strongly advise against it. If only because if people start doing it, it screws over everyone else.

I ordered off there yesterday. No requirement or request for information, and I went in from an external source as well, I wasn't on my uni's network.

I am a genuine student though and I have proof of enrolment, so I wasn't worried about it.

I did exactly the same, with no questions asked at all.

A genuine student. :D

Hmm thanks. My sister is still a student so maybe I'll ask her to put it on her card and I'll send her the funds! Seems legit :D

Loads of people used the education discount that are not students. Apple really don't seem fussed it has to be said.

I wouldn't risk it myself, but it could screw over the actual students using it. As without the discount, I may not have ordered a Macbook.

the purple shirted people have £100 cashback, which works out slightly better (though only 4GB & no extra applecare & no £70 itunes voucher.

?

If people have a conscience/don't want to risk being caught, the actual £ for £ price is better, but the extras are missing.

I see. So what you are saying, is £100 off is better if you don't buy through the normal store, not the edu store like we were all talking about !!! ;)

Anyway, as I've been saying, absolutely don't risk using the edu store unless you are in education at an eligible institution....!

Perkz scheme gives the same discount as the Apple Edu site, although you don't get the store voucher.

Still nice though :)

Does anyone play games on thier MBA? I am looking to get one just for basic home and travel use but do like playing LoL (the only game I play). I think the LoL mac client isn't particularly good so I'll probably install windows on it to play but does anyone have any experience of playing LoL on this MBA?

That's a pretty nice offer indeed. I think the 4GB version might actually suffice for me. I am only really going to be using it for web browsing and some light coding. I use Spotify so won't be storing heavy music/video files on there.

Does anyone else have an i5 4GB/128GB version? How is it?

Loads of people over at MR have the basic config, and they really love it. Saying it handles everything they chuck at it.

That's what I'm deliberating right now, whether to go for the i5 or i7, and 128GB SSD or 256GB. Money isn't too much of an issue but less is better of course. Main concern is for VMs - worried that the i5 will be a little sluggish compared to the i7, but worried that the i7 will give me an hour less battery life depending on load!

Anybody have any experience with Virtualbox, Parallels or VMWare with the i5 model?

I've been playing LoL on my 2011 MBP with an Intel HD 3000 GPU and with most settings on low I easily get 40-60 FPS.

The new MBA GPU is nearly twice as fast so running it well shouldn't be a problem. I think it's one of the better running games on Mac if you ask me.
