Man stopped by police while walking with son ‘because they thought he was a paedophile'

That doesn't seem a correct interpretation of the story to me.

It says it was the school, in a follow up response, who said the guard had concerns for the child's welfare due to the length of the walk, which will self says contradicts what he was quizzed over by the policemen initially.

He isn't really putting words in to anyone's mouth... he was going off what the police had said the security guard had called them out for.

Okay you two fine specimens of clued up and intelligent forumites. Please, go forth yonder in to the article and lift out the quote of the police saying suspicions of child aduction or paedophilia. Also while you're at it, find the quote where the security guard claimed he must have been a paedophile.

Clue: Neither the police nor the security guard had mentioned paedophilia at all. The biggest insight in to how this is all part of Will Self's attempt (which sadly seems to be working) is how he says:
Self said: ‘The insinuation that I might pose some sort of threat to young people – in a word, that I might be a paedophile – was underscored by his eyes then sliding to my drooping son. He was being absurd and offensive.’

So, it is his own interpretation that there was an insinuation that he might be a paedophile. In fact, how did he even arrive to that conclusion? This seems to be based on the fact the security guard raised concern for the welfare of the child - reportedly and quoted by the school as being because the walk is too grueling or intense for a child of that age. Rightly or wrongly, isn't important - this is why the guard reported him.

Self has simply thrown the paedophilia remark out there to get the public on his side.

To shave some time off their walk while in Bishop Burton near Beverley, Self asked a security guard at an agricultural college if they could cut through the establishment’s grounds.

His answer was a firm ‘no’.

Self said: ‘The insinuation that I might pose some sort of threat to young people – in a word, that I might be a paedophile – was underscored by his eyes then sliding to my drooping son. He was being absurd and offensive.’

The security guard, from Bishop Burton College, went on to report him to the police who drafted in a specialist female officer from 50km (30 miles) away ‘since there was a presumption that a child might have to be taken into custody’, said Self.
non news story the stupid rambling ****
masybe because hes on the TV he should be allowed to go where members of the public shouldn't.

Well, since none of the conversations are being reported verbatim, you and I are both just making an interpretation of the article, of which I am reading my interpretation from :-

The writer {Will Self} said the officer had already recognised him from the BBC comedy Shooting Stars but still phoned his details through to the PNC.

‘He {the policeman} saw the absurdity of the idea that I would deliberately approach a security guard, in full walking equipment, while abducting a child…

Why would the policeman agree on the absurdity of the situation being one of child abduction if that was not the initial reason they had been alerted of and approached Will with and not one of just concern for welfare over a 'long walk'.

And I agree it's probably Will using the word paedophilia, but that's not that much if a leap of inference from an accusation of abduction, even if he is being a bit dramatic.

They can now judge how paedophiles look? Outrages.

yea they dress in full rambling gear and take their small children with them into the countryside ;)
I believe most of them work for the BBC or have appeared on BBC television programs ;)

guy seems a **** anyway he would be the first none moaning if a security guard phoned the police because of a man acting suspiciously with a small boy and the police never bothered to come.

the boy was raped and murdered.

they are just doing what they are supposed to be he's to full of himself to realise I bet he changed his surname by deedpoll

I support this police stoppage.

‘No Englishman enjoying a ramble with his son should face examination by police at the roadside on suspicion of being a sexual predator,’

OK for a Scotsman or Welshman then? :p

Next week in the papers... Sexual predator and child not stopped by police after passing within several feet of them with their patrol car.

The security guard was perfectly entitled to report the matter to the police. Similarly, the police were perfectly entitled to follow it up and I'd be surprised if they hadn't.

Surely Mr Self should be reassured to know that the security guard in question was looking out for his son and was well meaning in his actions. It's not as though he was hauled into the station for a proper grilling. I'd imagine the conversation went something like this:

Police: "You a paedo?"
Self: "No, I'm his dad."

***2 min detail check***

Police: "Ok, on your way."

I just don't understand his outrage. Unless of course, he's got a new book coming out...?
