Tottenham Hotspur prepare to hijack Liverpool's bid for Willian from Anzhi Makhachkala
Tottenham Hotspur are to make a dramatic late bid to hijack Liverpool’s attempts to sign the Brazilian attacking midfielder Willian for £30 million.

Tottenham have long been interested in acquiring Willian, with chairman Daniel Levy having travelled to Ukraine in January to negotiate a deal with Shakhtar Donetsk before the move collapsed. Instead Willian moved to the Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala.
Willian has made no secret of his desire to play in the Premier League and Spurs head coach Andre Villas-Boas also tried to sign the 25-year-old when he was the manager of Chelsea.
Anzhi have put their entire first-team squad up for sale with owner Suleyman Kerimov deciding he does not want to bankroll the club’s big spending any more.
Willian is Anzhi’s most valuable asset and Liverpool have been in advanced talks to bring him to Anfield. It had been hoped that a deal would be announced later this week.
While Liverpool would still appear to be favourites to sign Willian, Spurs have now made their move and the attraction of playing for Villas-Boas and also living in London could sway the player’s thinking.

Willian has been in England recently hoping to decide his future having resolved to push for a move away from Anzhi.
Spurs remain in the market to sign another attacking player despite having already acquired striker Roberto Soldado for a fee that could rise to £26 million and the Belgian international winger Nacer Chadli.
The club sense an opportunity not to just push themselves into the Champions League places but also to challenge for honours. Signing Willian would mean that Spurs break their transfer record three times in one summer having also bought another Brazilian, Paulinho, for a fee that could rise to £17 million.
The scale of the deal to sign Willian, who can also play as a wide attacking player or behind the main striker, would raise further suggestions that Spurs are spending ahead of the anticipated sale of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid for a world record fee. Bale was not at Selhurst Park yesterday to see Spurs beat Crystal Palace 1-0.
Acquiring Willian would also hurt Liverpool who, like Spurs, started their league campaign with a victory and are also hoping for a top-four finish. Manchester United have also inquired about Willian but he is not high on their list of targets as they still try to pursue a deal to acquire Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona and also bid for Everton’s Marouane Fellaini.

Just beaten me to it CM, just read that the betting has changed in Spurs' favour for them to land Willian.

If I remember correctly, this is only the 234th time we've been linked with him so, needless to say, I'm not holding out much hope.

We really have done some business this transfer window. I never expected us to do so much, usually its all last minute bargains.com with Mr Levy. Obviously a huge push for top 4 this season. If only Bale would stay, once the team gel we should be the best team spurs have had in a long time

You're smoking crack if you think a player of Rooney's stature would go back to Everton. :p
I don't see him going abroad or to Chelsea so realistically that leaves Arsenal and Everton. Maybe Spurs will get him..........
It would be stupid to let him go on a free so I can just see Gazidis going "we'll get him at a bargain price next summer, just please the fans this year with a £35m that will of course be rejected and then we'll get him for £22m next summer" ;)

It's all very well when a player wants to leave but Man UTD can play hardball and not sell him. Arsenal need to be looking at players who are available and can be bought and I don't believe Rooney is available AT ALL.

It doesn't matter, we can't now afford 30+ mil on one player, afaik Chelsea have offered 30mil which has been rejected.

What do we do, buy Rooney, he gets injured.... boned. The club needs a minimum of 5 players, Arteta, AOC are out, Verm has been injured far more than not for years, Sagna close to the same on top of being useless anyway.

This also ignores that Rooney isn't close to his best currently, there is no reason to believe he'd chose a team that wouldn't be competitive, he has no reason to choose a worse team.

Fact is if we offer 40mil and its accepted, Chelsea would offer it and who would he chose? If at least some of the guys we had weren't injury prone idiots maybe we could get away with 2-3 more expensive players, but we can't. we need to be aiming for guys who have gone under the radar but who can be excellent. They are riskier, and frankly we need to buy more of them because some won't turn out good, with the state of the current squad both quality and injury issues, we can't even come close to putting all our eggs in one basket. This season is a write off, let a new manager next year have the funds, lets not let Wenger waste them on all the wrong players and I can't say this strongly enough Rooney couldn't be more wrong if we actively went out to try and find a player less suited to Arsenal.

AVB is a long time fan so to say we'd be hijacking liverpool's bid (if they've made one) isn't really the case. he's become available, we want him and we've got the cash and with roma selling osvaldo, maybe lamela is now unobtainable for the money we're prepared to pay?

i don't think moves like this are with a view to selling bale and i'd still be surprised if he goes this window. as i said before, picking up on hoddle's point. if he's going, why hasn't he gone yet? then of course, if we do go in seriously for willian then maybe it's because bale is going?

a 3 pronged attack of willian, soldado and bale would be immense. power, finishing and pace and a mass of creativity.

He followed Rafael shortly after - he's off to Utd.

edit: We're still the bookmakers favourites to sign him:

I guess Lucas following him back and the Instagram likes are swaying it in our favour.

Bookmaker according to your link...Ohh its work tomorrow so forgive me for being pedantic.

Edit on a serious note is he actually any good? Also why did the rich guy pull the plug on Anzai?

If you're on twitter I want to follow you Purdy. You crack me up on here, I can't imagine how funny you'll be without rules.

I don't use my twitter to post unfortunately unless asking for help from someone :p

Maybe one day, seems you get arrested too easily for dumb stuff on twitter though

I read that he lost half a billion in a matter of days (no idea how) but others are saying he's just realised that it's impossible to make his dream of a making mega club work in Makhachkala.
