Bank Holiday Break

So dropping off the child with her grandparents this weekend and looking for a place to go for a couple of nights, just me and the missus. She wants somewhere with a bit of nightlife but im happy walking around town in the day visiting locations of interest.

We live in the West Midlands and I am slightly concerned about Bank Holiday traffic as i dont want to be stuck in a car for a third of our break so maybe 300 miles maximum distance.

Any ideas out there?

It's also the Edinburgh festival at the moment so it's going to be busy and hotels will be expensive.
