Hi all,

It's been about 6 years since I've had to get an insurance quote for a car so I'm a tad out of practise, basically ever since we bought a house our car has always been in my wifes name and she has built up her NCB.

However, we're moving house soon and we will need a little run about as I work full time and the wife part time, my parents have a little T reg Fiesta Zetec that used to belong to my grandparents, it has very little mileage and has always been looked after so suits us down to the ground.

The quotes I'm getting for insurance are in the region of £500 a year, I'm 28 now have had my license for 10 years! It seems an excessive amount especially as I put milage up to 5k a year.
The car is worth probably less than that anyway, I'm out of the loop when it comes to this so are there any tips and tricks I could try to get the price down? Ideally I wanted it all in my name but maybe forced to get my wife to insure it, unfortunately we can't add the car to our policy already as they don't allow more than one car.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers

Get wifey to put it in her name, you as named driver and whom drives it the most. And preferably with an insurer that can build NCB to named drivers.

Make sure your wife is down as a named driver on your policy, also try adding any other older female relative as that can help quite a bit.

It will always be fairly expensive as you don't have any NCB to use yourself but it will get a lot cheaper after your first year :)

See if there is anything your wife's current insurer can do for you regarding an introductory ncb/discount based on the fact you've been a named driver on their policies for the last x years.

Does seem a bit pricey considering I'm 20 with 0 years NCB and managed to insure a 1.4 Fiesta for £680ish (can't remember exact figure).

Maybe it's the postcode?

Post code is a small village and parked on the drive!

Any insurers better than others for cheaper quotes?

I think I tried aviva, elephant and another two I can't remember the name of.

Thanks for the replies

Best quote i got was from tesco after entering my clubcard number and not using them on a compare site. Took like 15% off last year! Mine was extortionate until i added the GF as a driver. She brought it down from £1300 to £1050. That was for a 52 plate 1.8 MK4 astra. Right rip off to be fair but was my first insurance policy of my own.

Good luck, tried direct line?

Will you be ok with the Fiesta...bit boring compared to your other car history!!!

Stick other half on, I think I just renewed the a4, 2 named drivers and is only £330 a year or around there. If I only have myself as driver shoots up to £500+

Multicar?

Will try.

Haha, never really hard a good car to be honest! Ageing, little speedy things. A kid and a house put to end having a goodish car.

I'll try quotes with wifey as the main.

Sounds good to me too! Lowest I can get my renewal (with 9+ years NCB) is £220.

That's with Sainsburys.

I too have 9 years NCB and the lowest quote I could get tonight was £376 with protected no claims and a £150 voluntary excess with Esure (who aren't well regarded). :(

It'll end up costing me more than £376 because they don't provide full European cover, and I need it.

My voluntary excess is £0.

I need full euro cover too, but Sainsbury's (after a phone call before leaving the UK) will up the cover to match your UK cover (free of charge).

3. Extending your policy cover abroad

Please contact us to arrange this cover

your main permanent home is in the

£0 voluntary excess....lucky sod. My Middlesex postcode doesn't help matters.

What does "minimum cover" actually mean? I read somewhere that it's TPFT only, but I'm not sure about that.

It is whatever minimum insurance cover required by the country in question. But as they will up the cover to match your UK cover, free of charge, it's well worth the phone call to arrange before going abroad.

Ah right, thanks. Esure charge a £26 admin fee + £14 for the "green card".

I'll give my current insurer, Admiral, a call tomorrow and see what they can do about my renewal. I'd prefer to stick with them if I can, but when I did a quote on their site earlier it was about £300 more than Esure.
