Audio Ouputs on MSI G45-Z87 question

Hey guys,

I have the MSI G45-Z87 motherboard, and I was wondering, for the sake of tidying up the outside of my case a little, is it possible to have your speakers plugged into the audio out (green) jack, and a headset plugged into and configured to one of the other audio outs that are usually used for surround sound?

The main reason is, I hate having my headset plugged into the front panel on my case as the wires look really untidy and I'd rather have all the wires at the back of the case without switching them around all the time. Can I use the software that came with the board to tell it that it's actually headphones plugged in and not, for instance, a left rear speaker as it may be with surround sound?

Any helps appreciated.

Yes, just plug headphones into whichever output, let's say rear, then select headphones when the box pops up asking what you just connected.

Im afraid that doesnt seem to work.

When i plug the headphones into one of the 4 available outputs around the standard, green coded speaker/headphone output, the menu that pops up assumes it's a 5.1 speaker, such as middle, rear left, right etc.

I basically wanna tell it that it's not one of those, but just another output. I wouldnt mind if the speakers and headphones both output at the same time, as i can very easily switch off the speakers. It's a bit more fiddly pulling cables in and out all the time from the back of the case however.

Apologies, I just tried all of the outputs. It would appear the blue one (side speaker) brings up the option for headphones. The rest of the outputs did not.

Now they both play at the same time. No biggy as stated previously!

Cheers for the help, I doubt I would have re-tried simply plugging it into them again, so I probably wouldnt have tried the blue one if I hadnt read this. Feel like a bit of a plonker now. Genuinely was as simple as what you said. A durrr!

Thanks.

Interesting. I tried it with my motherboard, using the orange and black ports, and it worked fine. It always gave me the full choice of options when connecting something. It's possible that some onboard audio solutions limit what each can port can be reassigned to.
