1GB 550GTX TI better than a 512mb 4870?

GPU wise there isn't much in it (IIRC the GTX550TI was a direct competitor to AMD's HD5770, faster in some games & slower in others).

Card wise I would take the 550TI simply due to the extra VRAM onboard. Both GPU's are powerful enough to take advantage of the 1GB VRAM.

yeah agree 512mb just isn't enough where as 1gb will help out so much more

The gtx550ti would also be my choice but he already has a 4870. I would want a bigger upgrade.

Yeah would be looking for a bigger upgrade, but was hoping that this was something that wiuld benefit me. What would be a decent upgrade for £50 - £ 100? (Second hand is also possible)

Ah sorry I mis-read your post as you having the option between the two.

In that case a HD7850 (around £80-100 used) or GTX660 (£90-110ish) would be a great option.

Roughly double the performance in most games.

I had 2 4870s and my PC was on 24/7 for months. Cost me a small fortune :D

lol amazing cards for the price though, back in the day when real competition existed between companies. the 4870 really kicked Nvidia hard with their gtx260, but now Amd and Nvidia are working together we'll never see those days again.
