£800-£1200 Gaming spec

hey guys thanks for all the great ideas i have a few questions
but first I don't feel confident putting any sort of watercooling systems in this build.
what would a computer at the lower end of the price range look like?
are there any difficulties involved with having both the SSD and Hard Drive ?

No worries fella.

The refurb'd H100 offers very decent cooling for the price. I added it partly because of that but also to show the cases I picked can mount these coolers, the cheaper cases don't really allow this is an option. The CLCs are sealed units so aren't true watercooling it just gives the look whilst offering good thermal properties.

SSDs offer amazing boot times and reduce the load times of games installed to them. They are a bit of luxury item but we will try to fit them in if the budget allows it.

You seem dead set against windows 8 but I will point out there is a trial you can use for free for 3 months. Knocks £80 off the budget whilst you make up your mind over it should you choose to do so.

Recently the prices of the 7950 and 670s have been slashed. The minimum GPU I would recommend is a 7870LE. These GPUs are closely related to 7950s (being Tahiti cored too) so OC'ing them allows them to trade blows with a stock 7950. With the 7950 price drop they aren't the bargain they once were.

Still a respectable gaming build which alllows OC'ing of the CPU and GPU to improve performance. Of course you can tweak as you see fit. I've used a decent keyboard and mouse but this is chipping into the budget some what.

It might be best to pick a case you like and work from there. For a single 1080P 60Hz panel running dual GPUs is overkill really so a 500W PSU is ample and saves cash on the mobo too.

This rugged Antec can still mount 240mm rads and has a green military theme. I've ditched the OS as I mentioned the Windows 8 trial.

I wish you all the best with the build. You can use THIS to post a basket of what you think you might like to buy :)

EDIT

I stupidly used the 1866Mhz kit when the 2133Mhz is priced the same, I clicked on the wrong kit. Obviously change that I'm not going to edit the baskets now to include it.

Hey thanks so much for answering my question i will keep the SSD
I have tried window 8 before and was frankly confused a lot of the features i was used to where either not there or well hidden and i would be much more comfortable helping my little brother out with problems on an OS i know how to use.
thanks for showing me some of the cheaper builds even they look impressive i will post what i think i'm going for it'd be great if you would notice any problems with it when i post it.

Hey guys.
Thank you all for your great builds.
I sat down today with my little brother so that he could choose the aesthetic parts of the build for himself as it is him that has to use it almost daily and he wants it to look "awesome" But when looking at the cases we found one he liked (took ages) but it didn't come in green so I came up with a new build using mostly parts you guys recommended but again i did not choose the liquid cooling for the processor.
So here is the build please look it over and by all means tell me which parts do not work together.

IPS panels aren't great for gaming as such fella. The PSU is OTT for the mobo really and having a modular unit would be nice. RAM is also looking to be stupidly tall with those heatspreaders. The HD3 isn't a bad mobo but the D3HP is better and would OC better.

If it was my lil bro I'd probably consider this seeing as he doesn't seem to mind a bit of blue to "tart it up".....

The Ronin has a nice big window panel to show off the colour coded internals. Bitfenix do coloured strips for their cases to inject colour into them, I can't see that OCuk stock them for the Ronin yet but they could be added later if you wanted to.

Thankyou Hono
I was unsure about the height of the ram when looking at it and i decided to go with a bigger is better approach to the PSU but if its unnecessary i will of course scale that back
I will ask my little brother what he thinks of the case & keyboard as i see you have used the same mouse i did if change anything i will let you know but if thats the best internals for my price bracket then i'd be happy to stick with what you suggest expect a revision soon.

I would go with this HONO and DOOM are two of the best speccers the forums have if they have suggested it, it will surely do well for your little brother and although looks are a personel choice your are always going to have to comprimise one way or another to get the best of both worlds

^ I really like that Hono. :)

EDIT: what the hell are you doing up at quater to 5 anyway? :)

Cheers bud :) There is no rest for the wicked ;)

Thankyou Hono

I think you'll find you used the same mouse as me ;) I've stuck with that mouse and keyboard combo through and through. They are not the cheapest options but good quality.

It all comes down to balance really bud. 500W is ample for a single GPU setup to be honest. The Plextor SSD isn't bad but the write speeds are quite low, at the time for the sake of another few quid the Toshiba or the Sammy Evo would have got my vote.

Prices have changed now due to the weekly offers, you'll notice the CX500M PSU is no longer on offer. There is a cheaper Matterhorn cooler but the fan isn't blue. The Plextor SSD is now £90 so it's mental to pick that over the Evo, the Toshiba is now £95 so we can forget that too.

I did my best to balance good value performance parts (with good warranties) and tried to make the rig look "Awesome" without spending over the odds to do so. There is always some wiggle room in spec'ing. I look forward to seeing your next basket now you've had some practice, the offers are valid for another week so you have time to tweak things around :)

That Antec is Seasonic made isn't it?

Correct.

Well worth the extra over the CX500 modular even if it does mean missing out on some modular cables (luckily the Ronin has plenty of room to hide the extra cables).

In fact here's a great spec.

Hey guys thank you for your new builds I'm uncertain about using AMD over intel as i have only ever used intel and have been very pleased with them. are they better for gaming computers or just different ?
I will be posting another build later today and will be looking to purchase before the end of the week.
